Please subscribe to the above - I'll be doing the above. Not on any smiley - bus routes, I take it?

I saw a low road bridge last week, which wasn't in the vicinity of Betelgeuse but in Guildford after all. 6' 9" on King's Road.

smiley - ok Subscribed.

No, I don't think any buses go that way. smiley - rofl 6'9" really is low. Aren't historical roads fun?

At one time, we lived outside Philadelphia along the oldest turnpike in the country, next to an old train station that was still in use. There were only two ways out of the complex.

One meant peering through the 1890s-era railway bridge to see if anybody was coasting rapidly downhill. The other? Also a railway bridge, arched, with only room for one car at a time. This was a two-way road... The standard approach was to sneak up on it carefully, peer around, then dash through the opening as fast as possible.

The whole of the eastern US's road system is built on American Indian trails. According to Wikipedia, 'I-81 [an interstate highway] largely traces the paths created down the length of the Appalachian Mountains by migrating animals, American Indians, and early settlers.' Actually, it's the Great Wagon Road, which carried tens of thousands every year in the 18th Century.

One question – is it normal for a tin opener in the US to be called a canopener (one word)? I did a Google search for 'canopener' and it replied 'did you mean: can opener'?

I see the bridge described as 'can opener', 'can-opener', and 'canopener'.

The site itself uses 'canopener', so I went with that.

Yes, one thing. smiley - smiley I'd prefer to use 'ineducable' rather than 'uneducable', if that's okay. As Thomas Jefferson said to John Adams in 1776. smiley - winkeye

By a whole EIGHT INCHES! smiley - rofl

That's as far as they can go - then it will be even with the level crossing at the next street.

Shall we add something? They're supposed to do the work on Tuesday, I can keep you posted. So far, just the crash beam has come down.

Well, there's no reason why we can't add a paragraph at the end and maybe tweak a bit of text here and there if needed. Let me know what changes you think should be made.

A change that doesn't so much solve the problem but move it up a bit is some sort of progress, I suppose…

I still believe that the answer to the low bridge is to replace the existing bridge with a floating bridge. It's the answer to every problem, or possibly the problem to every answer.

Oh, dear - I didn't realise this was going up today!

Can we add a note at the end?

Canopener Update: Work began on 29 October 2019 to raise the level of the Canopener Bridge – by a whole 8 inches (20cm). This work is part of a $500,000 improvement project for the Durham railway bridges. Perhaps the Canopener Bridge will open fewer box trucks.

It isn't - they've just confused this bridge entry with the other smiley - dog bridge entry and posted in the wrong thread - this is a bridge too far.

But I can certainly add a note on the end.
