The Infamous Cat Shirt

We need more clever shirts in this world. To that end, Clarke (U171994) and I are making a very clever shirt. It will have the phrase "I have a big cat in my pants" in as many languages as we can find. So far, this is what we have:

English - I have a big cat in my pants.
French - J'ai un grand chat dans mes pantalons.
Spanish - Tengo un gatto grande en mis pantalones.
Portuguese - Eu tenho um gato grande em minhas calcas.
Italian - Ho un gatto grande in miei pantaloni.
German - Ich habe eine grosse katze in meinen hosen.
Russian - ?
Japanese - ?
Chinese - ?
Hebrew - ?

Can someone fill in the blanks or add more languages? Thanks!

Kingston, Ontario, Canada, May 12-13, 2001

Our high school Reach for the Top team has made it to the Ontario provincial competition for the second year in a row! Woohoo!!! For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, Reach is a trivia competition very similar to Jeopardy, except there are four people on each of two teams in a game, not three people in direct competition, and instead of Alex Trebek giving you a bunch of categories to choose from, we get 100 questions in categories of two to eight questions each. The topics are much the same: history, geography, literature, world/provincial/state capitals, word puzzles, math problems, various kinds of science, etc. We get Jeopardy-style buzzers, too. For more information on the rules and history of Schoolreach and Reach for the Top (Alex Trebek was one of the first quizmasters way back when), go check out www.reachforthetop.com/.

The Guinness Train Commercial

I'm not sure how to begin this entry, but I suppose it would be sufficient to say that the new Guinness ad with the guy on the train is simply an amazing commercial. If you haven't seen it, I definitely suggest it. To quote Ferris Bueller's Day Off, I highly recommend it; it is so choice. Basically, the ad starts with some guy, flanked by two of his friends, all staring at a glass of just-poured Guinness. The camera does a pan/zoom into the glass and suddenly the guy is standing on a kind of subway train with a bunch of other commuters. One of the other train riders is singing the baritone or bass intro of some song in latin. The train passes through a tunnel, and as soon as it comes back out into the light, everyone on the train is singing, with the exception of the Guinness drinker, who is watching them with an amused grin on his face. As the song approaches the climax, the camera flits here and there inside the train, until it settles on the original baritone who is singing a soli section (not really a solo, but a separate melodic bit inside the main theme). As timpanies boom a V-I ending (the usual timpany passage at the end of classical music: BUM bum BUM bum, etc., in perfect fifths), the train zooms through an orchard of some kind and what look like cherry blossoms fly behind it in its wake. The flowers morph into bubbles in a glass of Guinness, and the Guinness ad resolves out of the foam. Very poignant camera work, an excellent choir, and a hella-good song makes this ad one of the best commercials I've ever seen. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find the song used here. If anyone has any idea of what it is, could they please respond to this entry? Please? smiley - smiley
