By the way, the first sentence is annoying me. I had it:
For many, the United States Civil War was a fight for freedom, but for a time, those seeking to be free first had to fight for the right to fight for their freedom.
Bel changed it to :
For many, the United States Civil War was a fight for freedom, but for a time, those seeking to be free had to fight for the right to fight for their freedom first.
I think it sounds inelegant the second way, but I get that it could be confusing the way I had it.
