Well its certainly ascii, but *is it art*? 
Theyre related to smileys, and a fair bit of thought and experiment go into messing about with characters to get different effects in all branches of ascii art. Is it a subversion? Well yes, but not a very harmful one.

Well it's art like gentlemen's relish.
I like to think of it less like experiment and more like visual resoning 
. Everyone loves subversions (like greebo)
