Flotsam and Jetsam

Currently I am experiencing computer problems at work. I am in need of an exorcist. If you know of a reliable one leave me a note. Three times in the last two days I have whacked my kneecap on the corner of my desk. Consequently, it has become nearly impossible to kneel on any hard surface. I must remember to stop injuring myself. Speaking of my short-term memory, while at dinner the other evening I left my car window open during a rainstorm. I've been driving around with my seat swathed in towels ever since. This morning a co-worker brought me a piece of Boca Negra. This is a chocolate cake soaked in brandy. I do believe I had a contact high. Quite pleasant while at work, really.

In closing, by the end of this summer I want to finish both "Middlemarch" and the Harry Potter series. I would like to know what all the fuss is about.

A Momentary Lapse of Free Time

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to all my online friends. Due to a short-staffed office, loads of paperwork on my desk, projects that need to be completed, and an increasingly complicated personal life, I have precious little time to spend on this site. Any messages or conversations left for me will be answered eventually. I hope.

Now, back to the grind...

Hangin' with the Sangha

This past week I spent some time with the good folks at the Rocky Mountain Buddhist Center. Unlike others on the guide, I am not intimidated by religion or spirituality. I do understand, however, that there is a difference between the two. I know a lot of people who are one and not the other, and this leads to a lot of hostility towards and by people of faith. Since I was raised without religion--the product of a "mixed" marriage--I always actively avoided any involvement with church, synagogue, or temple. Lately, though, I've become curious. In this spirit (hah!) I've been noodling around with Buddhism for the last several months.

Why Buddhism? The lack of absolutist beliefs. The lack of hierarchical despotism. The lack of money grubbing, political positioning, and self-promoting charismatic leadership. Not that it's immune from human misbehavior, but I have yet to see the Buddhist Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. I just wish it's followers weren't so darn earnest. Laughter is one of the joys of existence. Life wasn't meant to be led without levity. And enlightenment should not preclude a giggle, a chortle, or a guffaw.

While curled up on my cushion the other night I noticed something. Without shoes, we humans can look vulnerable. Even though we're bombarded with mindless sexuality in popular culture sometimes seeing a toe peeping out of hole in someone's sock can be suprisingly intimate.
