All I wanted from them...

All I wanted from them was a reassurance that the hunt for foreign postings would not be encouraged... Just something in the same vein that what was said last year, really... Or something along the line of what Jim Lynn said...

Instead of that, we get the open threat that all the foreign postings will be failed if we dare "testing" the system by posting foreign stuff with translation in the same posts?!...smiley - yikes and

I now just need to get up someone's nose and they can go through my postings and yikes away all the ones with some French in them knowing that they will _automatically_ be modded... Charming...smiley - steam
Even so those postings were there to help _this_ site's Researchers and there is nothing offensive in them?!...smiley - grr

Where is the brick wall?!... It will be less painful banging my head on it...smiley - wah

I'm definitely feeling less and less comfortable on here...smiley - sadface

I read your footnote on your PS... I agree with it...

I also couldn't resist the temptation lurking on the darn thread again [even so I have unsubscribed instead of exploding like I was tempted to do]... Interesting what you said there... Shame that it will certainly fall into deaf ears...smiley - sadface

Talk soon...smiley - surfer

Actually I'm worried that Peta and Mina will be down on me like a tonne of briques.

Where is the limit - when is a word foreign?

I admit that it may seem unfair speaking languages which others can't understand, but I tolerate Swedish, Welsh or Norwegian, or other languages I don't understand. It's only chat after all.

The BBC site caters for Welsh, Hindi and other minority languages.

When Ashley was an Italic, French was allowed (it does say on his page that he studied French and lived there for some time)

When I first joined, Mark Moxxon told me that one day he hoped that entries would be allowed in other languages.

It all boils down to the insularity of monolinguals, for which I have no sympathy whatsoever.

>I admit that it may seem unfair speaking languages which others can't understand<

Actually, it would only be unfair if people were starting to post foreign stuff in the middle of a conversation where everyone speaks in English but, most of the foreign postings have either been in a controlled/restricted environment/area [languages related projects, Personal Spaces, the famous Let's parlez franglais thread etc] or/and have translations in English when/where needed...

But, now, even having translations in the same post than the foreign words won't stop the posting being modded... That's pushing it a bit somehow...smiley - steam

The thing I liked about Hootoo was the fact that it was an international site... It sure going to lose that appeal soon if they go ahead with that _new_ interpretation of the rules...

Plus, they're going to lose an important [and free] asset there as people who have English as first language wanting to brush their knowledge of a foreign language will have to look somewhere else...

The saying "I pointed at the sky but they looked at my finger" [quoted from memory] seems to illustrate perfectly this situation...
Why don't they look at the bigger picture instead of stubbornly hiding behind _their_ interpretation of what the rules say [which, in my opinion never really said that foreign postings would be automatically modded anyway]...

I suggested a scheme for _all_ the BBCi sites [would save money as well for the beeb that way], but the reply was _only_ about h2g2...
Sad really... At the end of the day, those who are losing out are this site's Researchers...

And of course, the Italics are shooting themselves in the foot regarding getting more staff... The way to do it is to prove to those who fund a project/etc that there is a definate need for more staff and that can only be done by starting more activities/schemes/etc...
But if they carry on refusing to start anything new, the BBC won't see any point in paying for another Italic [even a part-time one]...

Oh well, I suppose I better expect a flood of emails from the mods regarding my foreign postings in my inbox soon too...smiley - whistle
