As mark-up languages go, it's amazingly good! Compared to some of the XML I've had to use it's positively user-friendly!

He, that is rather indisputable. smiley - smiley Your point is duely observed, and since I've finally gotten around to reactivating my account, my introduction has been updated accordingly.

Do you have my root password? Or am I going to have to re-install RedHat?

Have no fears; your root password is safe with me. Since it is already a lost password, obviosly, I cannot give it back to you. That would sort of violate the very assumption that it is a lost password. This is a rather involved problem, based on a quantumphilosophically intriguing mechanism, but in laymans terms, I can only *keep* the password, not use them or give them back. Ok? smiley - smiley

As far as reinstalling goes, that will not be needed!

For a typical RedHat install, you won't even need to have the root password to gain root access. In pre-7.0, booting in single user mode does not require a root password (simply ctrl-c the the passwd question and proceed to change the password.

For 7.0 or 7.1, or somewhat more secured earlier versions, if you have a bootable cd or floppy, you can boot from that, mount the original /etc dir somewhere (like /mnt/etc/) and change the passwd.

If you still recall a user passw (I can't, tell you know, I only get the r00t-pw's), but have not installed all security patches, you have plenty of opportunity to download a script for hacking root on your machine.

HTH! smiley - smiley
