The Reef
Posted Oct 14, 2000
It pays to do more research!
A team from work booked a large fast-cat (sea-going catamaran, seats 56 inside comfortably), and went for a day of snorkeling on the coral reef that rings Key West.
Our Captain took us to the Western Dry Rocks, a section of reef near the Sand Key lighthouse known for it's accessibility by newcomers and first time snorkelers. They let us loose on nature for about two hours. Visibility was a mind-numbing sixty feet in all directions.
The first and always the most enjoyable thing about the reef is the sheer number and variety of fish. A school of wrasse, couldn't even fathom the quantity, was writhing away in a feeding frenzy of bright yellow and cobalt blue. Two barracuda, each as long as my arm, looked up at me from the bottom, sixteen feet below. Members of the gang shouted over as a small sea turtle, about a foot in diameter, swam beneath our fins. Gigantic groupers and moon jellyfish patiently endured our closer inspection.
Too soon, it was time to board the cat. As the captain called us in, the mate threw out a couple of handfuls of crackers, and the water at the bottom of the steps erupted as hundreds of yellowtails appeared from nowhere to grab the treats. There is nothing like being surrounded by that kind of crowd.
On the way back in, three dolphins joined the boat, surfing the wake for almost ten minutes.
All in all, a nice break, and a wonderful day on the water.

The Weekends Before Fantasy Fest
Posted Oct 1, 2000
So many people come late into knowledge of Fantasy Fest each year that a new phenomena has spawned: The Pre-Fest Weekends. Upon finding out that their carefully planned expedition to Key West will fail to fall on Fantasy Fest Celebration dates, they endeavor to convert their vacations to mini-Fantasy Fest celebrations. Others are enlisted to their cause, and what should be confined to two semi-dangerous weeks of heavy partying, nudity, and general fasching-style behavior (carefully supervised and orchestrated, of course) starts to break out in anarchic revelry.
An otherwise quiet weekend at the end of the sleepy season has turned into berserk-o-rama tonight. A fight was spotted at the corner of Fleming and Duval (dissolved with dispatch by the superior police force) at the unheard-of hour of eight p.m. while many incredulous bystanders gaped and gawked at this unthinkable breach of standard island behavior.
Others will no doubt follow as the date nears.

Preparations for Fantasy Fest 2000 are in high gear
Posted Sep 24, 2000
All of the candidates for Fantasy Fest 2000 are holding fund-raisers now, and tonight one of the candidates held a street party in the 700 block of Duval from 7:00 until Midnite. This is one town where you can throw a street party on the main drag and stop traffic for five hours! Many intoxicated revelers are staggering about even as we speak.
The candidates who raise the most money will be crowned King and Queen of Fantasy Fest.
