Incendiary Pig
Incendiary pigs were used by the Romans as a counter to elephants on the field of battle. Someone (I wish I knew who and how) discovered that elephants are terrified by the sound of pigs squealing. This information was used to devise a means of getting elephants to take the quickest route off the battlefield; make them run away. A live pig was coated in pitch, set on fire and catapulted in the direction of enemy troops on elephants. The elephants then ran away crushing anything in their path.
Surely a tribute to human ingenuity.
