'Fess up - I'm not alone in this stupidity am I...?
Thought a good introduction would be the explanation of my user name -chosen especially for the BBCi. Deliberated with Lemon and Gold Brick ideas and other such smart Alec h2g2 references. Then settled on what you see. The below demonstrates my ability to be at once astoundingly clever and yet heart-breakingly stupid. Enjoy.... So, I'm waiting for my partner to finish work in the hotel where he briefly worked while paying for a Masters degree (settle down, I'm just setting the scene you know). As was my wont, I snuggled up at the bar with the cryptic crossword and a pint. 'Moon starer awkwardly' it read. 'Easy' thunk I. That'll be your standard, garden variety anagram won't it. Ho Ho Auracaria, you ain't so smart. Pride as they say cometh before the fall. (My personal index of such moments seems to be shockingly long for a mere whipper-snapper - don't let the old fashioned turn of phrase fool you). Those of you who may dabble in the cryptics from time to time may be familiar with the concept that it is entirely possible to construct (correctly) a word from a well written clue without ever having knowledge of that word before. And so it was. 'Astro'. Good start - looks right. Like the way it links in with the clue. What about these here other letters? 'Nomer'. Hmm. Got a nice latinate sort of feel to it. Fits in with the letters I've already got. This looks like a real possibility, must look it up in the dictionary later. Looks dead familiar though. Ponders. Ponders some more. Start to get heartily hacked off with this elusive word that looks so innocently familiar. 'Hey' I say to other half (some hour of misery later!!!!). Ever come across a word Astro - nomer? 'What?' quoth he 'astronomer?' I have never lived this down, and Astro-Nomer has become something of a watchword in our household and family ever since. To those of you who saw this coming in the first paragraph - Yah booh sucks. Your Astro-Nomer time will come, my friend. To the rest of you - May this self-depracating statement be a beacon of hope in the dark times of 'wood-for-the-trees' syndrome as I believe it should be nick named. I look forward to guiding with you all!Latest Messages
