Gnomon - time to move on

Well I tried. I volunteered to take up the role of sub-editor again. I was a good sub-editor in the past. I sub-edited more than 400 entries, fixing the GuideML, correcting grammar and questioning inconsistencies.

I gave up sub-editing because of the way I was treated (I was insulted and reviled for suggesting that there was a mistake in the picture attached to one of my entries). After a long break, I decided eventually to let bygones be bygones and volunteered to take up the post of sub-editor again.

I got no reply. Six weeks have gone by and none of the Guide Editors have replied to my offer, either to tell me yes or no. So either I'm not welcome, or there's nobody left running this site. Either way, I don't see the point, so I'm withdrawing my offer.

h2g2 was a good project while it lasted, but it has failed.

As long as the site is still here, I'll use it for typing up my articles in a form I myself find useful, but I see no further point in attempting to help build the Edited Guide.

I definitely feel this place has fallen below the threshold of sustainability. There are a handful of people still writing, just enough to keep the front page rotating, but there just doesn't seem to be enough participation otherwise. (And I'm guilty of nonparticipation as well, procrastinating on my proton therapy entry for over a year.) It seems there is rarely any discussion regarding new entries anymore. That was a big part of this site, beyond the entries themselves was the lively conversations the entries would spark.

Blah blah blah...

I miss what this place once was.

So do I. For various reasons this week I found myself reading conversations from 1999 and 2000, mostly attached to articles. it isn't what it was, but I shall stay subscribed to stay in touch with the remnants of the old guard.smiley - starsmiley - star

h2g2 is going the way of newsprint, supplanted by sites where you can upload pictures and edit what you've posted.

I love it still, and my music entries still provide my lecture notes.

I also direct strangers to my entries on Wittgenstein and Berkeley if I get into philosophical conversation with them.

And I'm still proud of my Rainbows End and Recumbent Bikes entries.

"And you can be proud of most of the things you have accomplished indeed. You really deserve some credit smiley - ok

I can not be very proud or happy with the current state of this site. Perhaps I should not have left, though it was in similar thoughts. The announcement 'BBCID' came from thin air, not knowing I still suffered the consequences last months smiley - weird."
