John the gardener says, "Free Tibet!"

Hi, Ben. h2g2 Friends of Tibet (A2170982) is something Chaiwallah (U219914) and I have been working on. It's getting a bit of a launch this week, thanks to Jimster, with a link on the front page. The idea behind it is to draw attention to Tibet and to provide some sort of meeting ground for people who share concern about what's going on there.

I've added a link to your Entry, 'Loving Kindness...', in the library. I hope you don't mind. Let me know if you'd prefer it gone and I'll remove it. smiley - smiley

Dang! I almost forgot. Well, in fact, I did forget...

I was about to include your name with a link, and so on... But I remembered that I'd decided not to do that, for the time being, because it seemed to imply that the Referenced Researchers were member of h2g2 Friends of Tibet or endorsed it, whereas they may not be comfortable with that suggestion.

Let me know if you would like one.

Cheers,

JTG

Please feel free to link to U148580. I will subscribe to the appropriate pages.

All I have done to support Tibet is attend a benefit gig in 96, and send Bertie Ahearn a postcard last month, so I cannot claim to be a supporter, more of a well-wisher than anything else.

I used to have a badge in the 1980s which said "Wearing badges is not enough".

Quite.

Lovely to hear from you, btw.

Take care.

Ben

Thanks, Ben. I've not visited for so long; and, when I do, it's to ask a favour. smiley - blush

It was actually Chai's Bertie Ahearn postcard campaign that got the ball rolling. So far, the response hasn't been great, but we're in it for the long term. If it encourages someone to take an interest in Tibet, it will have been time well spent.

The note at the top of your page gave me a jolt. I do hope you choose not to stray too far from h2g2. There are a lot of folks, like me, who may take you for granted; but we would miss you a lot if you gave up on us.

I'll add a link to your space right away.

Regards,

JTG

Kind words, John, and I appreciate them.

I am just keeping a much lower profile on h2g2, participating much less, and generally enjoying having a lower profile and concommitantly fewer expectations laid on me. However, I continue to monitor my old U-Space, as you can see. I am not sure if I will post any more original pieces here though.

Take care.

h2g2 takes a lot out of you in ways that are hard to define. This is the only web community that I've been involved with, so I can't say if this is something they all have in common. It's a strange way to interact with people.

I think I know what you mean, though, because I've felt like that too. I sometimes feel like the ghost of my h2g2 identity, which is a pretty strange way to feel.

Perhaps that's not what you meant.

Take care, Ben.

John

I wouldn't describe it in those terms, but I recognise what you are talking about. Don't get me wrong: it is immensely rewarding, but sometimes it is also seductively destructively hard work.

Working as I do with worms for company - when my summer helpers have gone back to school - I'm always rather amazed by whatever I write here, not because it's good, particularly, but just because I can still do stuff that involves stringing words together.

The sad bit is that so few people actually seem to read any of it; though I suppose that if everybody else is also staring at their own work, feeling the same way, the lack of interest in my stuff shouldn't come as a surprise.

Sorry, Ben; I wasn't really moaning... Well, perhaps a bit. smiley - blush

I've not tried AWW. In fact, there's probably a lot going on around here that I haven't got around to exploring. I'll give it a try.

Thanks for the tip. smiley - smiley

Hi John smiley - smiley Ben's asked me to explain this for her.

Miners around here dig through the AWW to pick entries for the UnderGuide. They keep the AWW clean, move entries, and keep the AWW active by commenting on entries. There's a page about this at A1092511.

The UnderGuide - the creative parallel to the Edited Guide on h2g2 - accepts and polishes excellent pieces that two of its miners have voted for. When the whole process is finished, the pieces appear on the Front Page from Friday through Sunday.

It's a fun job - more fun than it sounds on paper anyway smiley - ok And I'm sure you'd be a real asset to the UG...

(by the way, best of luck on the Friends of Tibet Project. I'll be happy to lend a hand or join in. Just holler!)

Hi, Jodan. Thanks for the invitation. That does look like an interesting project. smiley - ok

As I mentioned to Ben, there seems to be a lot of h2g2 that I haven't explored yet, including the AWW and the UnderGuide. Perhaps it would be best if I didn't commit to becoming a Miner until I get to know my way around that part of h2g2 a little better.

Unfortunately, I have had to give up other h2g2 jobs because I've found that I haven't been able to dedicate enough time to do them justice; so I'm hesitant to do that again, particularly as h2g2 Friends of Tibet requires a fair amount of regular research and updating.

Let me poke around in AWW for a bit first, perhaps contribute a thing or two of my own, to see how it works.

Any assistance you can give to help get Friends of Tibet airborne would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again. smiley - smiley
