Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like

Some time ago I seem to recall thee and me were engaged in a somewhat lengthy discussion about the difference between ska and reggae, wherin you stated that you'd like to be able to get hold of the originals of the stuff that influenced the 80's ska bands.

Trojan records are about to unleash (28/07/03) a double CD entitled 'One Step Beyond' which combines the two - quoted as 'the biggest hits of Two Tone plus the best of the 60's'.

If it's only half as good as theit 'Young Gifted and Black' 2 cd history of reggae, it'll be an absolute blinder.

I heard it reviewed recently, it must have been on R2, which is (I am ashamed to say) my default listening in the car after 10.00am, especially now that Jimmy Young has gone. (Awful, awful man, JY).

Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't actually done anything as dynamic as finding out more about it, but I think I will, now that you suggest it.

That was about 40 posts of topic-drift in the middle of a very earnest conversation about something else entirely, wasn't it?

Very probably. Isn't that where all the best bits of h2g2 happen? smiley - winkeye

Good weekend?

Lovely thanks. Chilled out time with girlfriends, though I was surprised how much I missed the cats when I don't have a Private Life to take my mind off things.

Hmm, cats. I might think about getting one when I move. Always been around dogs myself, but Cats have a certain independant streak which appeals to me.

Very smiley - geeky of me I know, but do you know Neil Gaiman's 'Sandman comic series? He won a Nebula for a story in the series called 'The Dream of a Thousand Cats.' It is quite wonderful.

Hoo keeps on at me to read them, but there are a lot of them, and they are expensive, so I keep putting them off. I love Gaiman's prose though, and know I'll love the graphic work too.

I like Pratchett's take on cats, that they are evil little buggers but elegent, furry and so-o-o-o-o cute.

As I recollect Gaiman's words on collecting his Hugo, (not sure what it was for) were: "F**k me, I've got a Hugo". smiley - laugh Come to think of it, it was Hoo who told me that, too.

Btw - I want to send you an email, is your IM email addy the best one to use?

If it can wait until I get home then yeah, the dancingmoon account is fine...

I will have a chat with my friend whio helps run a board for comics fans. If he can dig me out a pdf of Dream of a Thousand Cats I'll e-mail it to you. I assume the Oscar was for best Graphic presentation or whatever - normally given to people like Kelly Freas and Frank Frazetta...

Have you read Coraline? Now that's a spooky book. Greebo remains one of Pratchett's bestr creations in my ipinion. I love the scene in Witches Abroad where he finds the Rooster in the corn field.

The Hugo was for a short story, though I am not sure which one. "Coraline"? Is that by Gaiman? Whatever - I have missed it.

A pdf would be good, but bad too. I feel that artists deserve the money, even if record companies and publishers don't.

Oh, I agree entirely about PDF not being ideal, and I would never, ever recommend it but in one istantce it is a solution to a problem...

Coraline is a lovely little kids book, a horror story with real bite. It does contain one piece of wonderful childs logic along the following lines;

'Coraline went looking for the dangerous well that she had been told not to go near, because how could she not go near it if she didn't know where it was?'smiley - laugh

Story of my life that one. Abseiling over chasms of darkness really makes you appreciate the light.

I'll buy it next time I see it, and I would very much appreciate the PDF. Use the yahoo addy, not the hotmail one though. [email protected]

Ok, I'll speak to the Ed meister tonight.

The funny thing about the well is that you just *know* that was something one of his kid's actually said to him at one point...

When are you off to chilly Sweden?

Not for the forseeable. smiley - wah

PL is in Radio Silence at the moment on the other side of the world. Actually, we have exchanged two emails in two weeks, so I suppose it could be worse. At least I am not quite so obviously loopie-doo this time. He is back on Monday and I am picking him and the Son and Heir up at LHR, and - hopefully - spending a couple of nights in a seedy hotel in London with them. Son and Heir doesn't know about me, though, so it will be yet another tranche of Interesing Times.

See this bottomless pit of darkness? See this lovely abseiling rope? smiley - winkeye

Hmm, just seem a copy of said cd in the shops, and it is finger lickin' good. Despite the fact that I have all of disc one on other compilations (the original 60's stuff), it's damned near worth buying for the 80's stuff on disk twio alone...
