You paint a bleak picture. It's all rather unsettling. I'd call myself a post-newbie (still emerging from that newbie shell, but gathering confidence), which is my way of saying I don't yet know the community well enough or get involved enough to know precisely what to think of all this, but I can't help but wonder if I'm the sort of fluffy uncommitted type that happy accepts too much, and thus gives the BBC a justification. I don't want to see stuff dumbed-down or people throwing away the baby with the bathwater (or perhaps more accurately, the bomb with the fuse), but am I witnessing it all too passively?
Precisely where is the Small but Vocal (not to mention 'Vanishing') Minority? Are they all just reaccessing their relationship with the site? And I can't compare you with Hoovooloo at all - except in a few minor particulars - but isn't that what he was doing? What exactly happened while I was having a dozy Christmas?
Oh, hope you enjoyed your Holidays!
- Jordan

I'm very new to all of this, but have been reading your sadness about h2g2 in the past few days.
However, I notice that you have signed up for the Jan party. Is this a last ditch attempt to re-group ? And will you be board gaming, skating, or museuming ? What is it that you are wanting from the site ?
Thanks

Hi
Thanks to both of you for dropping by. First of all - don't take any of this too seriously. This IS only a web-site, and it really should only be a small part of each of our lives. It is a great place, full of great people, and if two or three of us are crabby and crotchety, you really should not let that prevent you experiencing it in your own way and drawing your own conclusions.
Franny, your question "What is it that you are wanting from the site ?" is a real hum-dinger. In fact I am not absolutely certain. I like to be challenged, to have to think, to learn new things and come to new conclusions, to be stopped in my tracks as you stopped me with that particular question. Oh, and I like to laugh. So I guess I like hanging out in the community far more than in Guide, which actually is no suprise.
I am going to the meet to meet my friends; I can only attend in the evening though, which is a shame.
Hi Jordan, I saw you in a couple of conversations with Hoovooloo - you always seemed to bring out the more civilised element in him, which is a tribute to your own level headedness.
You raise a lot of interesting questions yourself.
"I can't help but wonder if I'm the sort of fluffy uncommitted type that happy accepts too much, and thus gives the BBC a justification."
You are who you are. There is no particular virtue in being un-fluffy and committed. Useful synonyms are pig-headed and stroppy, and it is easy to see that there is precious little virtue in either of those!
"I don't want to see stuff dumbed-down or people throwing away the baby with the bathwater (or perhaps more accurately, the bomb with the fuse), but am I witnessing it all too passively?"
No - you are not being too passive. First off, there is always the real possibility that we are wrong. None of us see the whole site, and we are just bitching about the bits of it that we do see. Secondly the way in which we interact with the site is only valid for us - the way in which you interact is 100% valid for you.
"Precisely where is the Small but Vocal (not to mention 'Vanishing') Minority?"
Most of us are still around, sfaik only Hoovooloo has gone, and only Lucinda has withdrawn his labour (as it were), and only I am reassessing my relationship with the site. The group itself was disbanded by Lucinda a few months ago though.
"And I can't compare you with Hoovooloo at all - except in a few minor particulars" - I will take that as a compliment!
"What exactly happened while I was having a dozy Christmas?" - Hey I don't know. I missed it all too!
Seriously, both of you, form your own relationship with this site, and with the people on it. The SBVM never had anything as structured as an agenda, it was just a bunch of crotchety mis-fits mis-fitting together for a while, and it is no surprise that some of us have gone. They have at least taken their balls with them!
Happy new year to you both.
Ben
Thanks

Sad but true statement about the SBVM. But it's not the name, but the spirit that counts.
