The row of showers on the rader earlier dried out before they reached us.
weird to watch them get smaller as they moved East.

We got a few very brief showers yesterday. So brief that they came and went and the ground dried up before I realised they'd happened, until someone I was working with mentioned it. Thankfully there was a clear blue sky with hardly a cloud by the time I went home. Forgot to pick up my brolly on the way out in the morning.

Those midweek temperatures and the rain are going to be very welcome.

London Sunday
Looks a little more promising on the chance of a shower for the garden, some of the clouds are a darker grey but nothing more than a 30% risk.

Current H 18C L 15, Wind SW 12 dropping to 10mph later.
Humidity 50% rising to 85% this evening so stickey.

Looking at the long range forecast it's just possible we might go 4 weeks without rain...

Day one of the much vaunted rain event resulted in... 0.05" and a temperature only slightly lower than recently.

The record maximum for yesterday and today have both been 106° and both been from that awful, awful summer of 2011. I think it's time we started revisiting that summer's posts.

"An hour ago it was 105° here, and that's more than an hour before from the hottest part of the day. Yesterday's 106 was just plain stupid hot but at this rate we'll easily surpass it smiley - online2long When it's that hot and there's a wind blowing (as there was yesterday and today) it's just like standing in front of a powerful hair dryer, and there's nowhere to go to get away from it."

Yesterday 91/76 (50% chance of showers and storms) (actual: 94/75, 0.05" rain)
Today 88/75 (60% chance of storms)
Tuesday 85/73 (70% chance of storms)
Wednesday 86/72 (60% chance of storms)
Thursday 90/73 (40% chance of showers and storms)
Friday 94/75 (20% chance of rain)
Saturday 96/75
Sunday 96/76

Average max/min for this time of the year: 93/73
Record high temperature for today: 106 (2011)
Record low temperature for today: 63 (1912)

If Austin is like a hair dryer, Houston/Galveston is like a rice steamer. The rain has cooled it down a bit today, but with humidity in the 90%s, sweating just makes you wet, the air sweats back on you.

I've just had a look at the radar. The first bands of rain are crossing the coast from Brownsville all the way to New Orleans. At the rate it's travelling I reckon it should show up in Austin around early afternoon-ish.

Nope. This thing ain't moving very fast. It's predicted to hit Austin hardest tomorrow. Which is when I do my weekly food shopping smiley - cross It has just got very windy though...

And would you Adam and Eve it, I can hear raindrops hitting the damper in my chimney as I write. And now it's raining very, very hard. But not for very long, it looks like.

There was another sharp, but rather short, shower later in the day yesterday, but that was all we got here, and none of it showed up in the gauges at either Camp Mabry or the airport (the 0.04" is from very early on Monday morning).

But the Texas/Louisiana border around places like Beaumont and Port Arthur is getting hammered. More than 7" since Saturday night and more on the way. This system is hanging around the same way that Harvey did. The rain is still a long way from Austin and I'm not sure now that we're actually going to much. Or any.

Today's post(s) from 2011:
"Well, we didn't pass yesterday's 106, just equal it. I think that makes scorchio number 15 for the year so far."
"Can we make it to 106 three days in a row? Whatever the mercury says it sure feels like it out there right now. The last official reading was 103 at 3.51pm (almost 30 minutes ago)."

Here are the hourly rainfall totals from Beaumont since early this morning. There doesn't appear to be any let-up to come in the foreseeable future.

04:53 - 0.59"
05:53 - 0.20"
06:53 - 0.19"
07:53 - 0.37"
08:53 - 0.61"
09:53 - 0.31"
10:53 - 0.80"
11:53 - 0.56"

I make that 3.63" in seven hours, which doesn't sound like a lot by Texas standards, but that is on top of the 5.89" they've already had.

Flooding is a much bigger issue in and around Houston than previously, mainly because of unfettered development. There was recently an article about developers in League City (SE of Houston in North Galveston County, home of many astronauts) complaining that the city's new flood mitigation requirements would be too costly for them.

That right there is the problem. Once these developers build their master planned communities, they're gone. They don't care. It may cost them more now, but if they don't think about flooding their customers lose their homes later. smiley - cross

Hell, many of the people that flooded WITHIN the reservoirs West of Houston were not even told their homes were within the designated overflow areas.
