Why Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world... but for Gosho?

I went out for a drink last night with a friend. There's an area of bushes and small trees near to where we were sitting, and come dusk it was lit up with dozens of fireflies smiley - bigeyes

The weekend temperatures have dropped a little more smiley - biggrin

I hear that the first tropical storm of the year has formed in the Atlantic. They keep saying 'of the season' on the news, but that's not true. The season doesn't officially start until June 1st, and we often don't see much activity for at least a month after that.

Apparently it's only the second or third time a storm has formed in April. I can't say I'm surprised at that fact.

The 2005 year ran into 2006. I think the idea of hurricane "seasons" is obsolete.

Let me try that sentence again without distractions.

Florida Sailor - Growing like Topsy

I think there have only been one or two months without a hurricane. I remember we had one here in late November, about Thanksgiving. My wife and I were living on our boat and had just been married. As usual it was scheduled to make landfall about midnight. We were living on my sailboat in a marina at the time. About 9:00 pm I started going through the linen locker (all closets on a boat are called lockers) and started pulling out the towels smiley - towel. My wife shrieked 'What are you going to do with all my good towels?'

I told her I was going to wrap the around the mooring lines (ropes on boats are mostly called lines), because if the boat sank they would not be very good any more anyway. Throughout the night I went on deck every half hour or so to check my lines. At the height of the storm it was impossible to stand up, I had to scuttle around on all fours to check the lines.

This was in the 1980's and the storm was officially classified as a Tropical Storm and it made landfall at Sarasota, FL. We were in Saint Petersburg, on the northeast quadrant, the strongest winds. The gusts we received were well over hurricane strength.

We, and our boat, did survive, but it was a very long night.

There's only been one tropical storm (Hermine) to pass over Austin since I've been here and that was pretty scary. I can't imagine what it'd be like on a boat smiley - yikes

Today's forecast maximum is 68°, but it hasn't dropped below 71 all night, and it's currently 72. And look at those 90s next week smiley - sadface

Here's a damn good article by a great local writer who I may have met. We share several mutual friends so I started following him on boofcake.

Anyway, it's his story about this part of the Texas Gulf Coast, and the ever present threat of destruction.

Thanks, I'll look at that later.

So here we are, a Sunday morning in April after having spent at least a month with nothing but a sheet on the bed at night, and at least one night that was so warm I slept with nowt on the bed at all. But last night (and tonight too, most likely), I had to get the duvet out again. And it's going to be in the 70s at night again in a few days smiley - facepalm

By my reckoning we've had a grand total of five spring-like days this spring (there might have been a few others I've forgotten) - yesterday, Saturday, and three days during South by.

I wonder if anyone keeps a log of how many daytime temperatures there have been which are above the daily average? It seems to me as if at least 90% of them have been so far this year. Doesn't bode well for the summer.

I'm sure NOAA keeps track of these things.

Yesterday morning I had the a/c on before 10am (hottest day since last November, it says here). This morning I put the heater on for a short while before getting in the shower. Tomorrow we might be looking at a 98° heat index and 13° above average overnight, before we go back to below average overnights.
