There was a nice lunar eclipse at perigee leaving the moon lit by all the Earth's sunsets last night.

(Notice how I didn't call it a "super wolf blood moon".)

Yes, and thank you for that. I'm getting damn tired of all these bloody stupid names that keep being added to and invented for things. The beast from the east. The polar vortex. A weather bomb. The super duper werewolf bloody big moon.

I didn't see the eclipse itself. Well, you see one moon turn red you've seen 'em all. It's not exactly as exciting as a total solar eclipse, is it. A gorgeous sunrise or sunset like the ones we've been having just lately is far more smiley - bigeyes But, I did notice the larger than usual moon as it was rising when I was on my way home from work. I'd have taken a picture of if my phone's camera was any good at night shots. I had a good view of it framed between some trees.

Speaking of which, I don't know if I'm just noticing them more or if we really are having more of them, but the frequency of stunning dawns and dusks has seemed much higher in the last six or 12 months. Has there been a Krakatoa-type eruption somewhere that we haven't been told about which has thrown millions of tons of stuff into the atmosphere? I understand there were similarly stunning sunrises and sunsets around the world for some time after that eruption.

Any road up. It's 20° warmer this morning than it was 24 hours ago. 57° as opposed to 37°. Looks like it's going to be 20° colder 24 hours from now smiley - cdouble

I don't believe so. The last major atmospheric thingy I can think of was the Saharan dust we were getting late last summer.

It's interesting how it's really not easy to visually see the increase in size between a normal full moon and one at apogee, but it's easy to perceive that the moon is visibly larger near the horizon. It's a bit of an optical illusion that when you see the moon near familiar objects on the horizon, the moon looks larger and when it's overhead, it looks significantly smaller. Yet if you compare both to a coin or other object at arms length, it's obvious that they are precisely the same size.

Unless you're watching Joe vs. The Volcano. That moon was freeking HUGE!
smiley - fullmoon

I never saw that film. Should I?

Apparently there was... well, some are calling it sleet while others say ice pellets, when the cold front arrived last night. I was already in bed by that time smiley - zzz

Sleet, ice pellets...

Our weather dude told us it was called "graupel". It's what happens when super-cooled water freezes on snowflakes on their way down. So they're frosted snowflakes.

As for Joe vs. The Volcano, it got mixed revues, but I love it. It was Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan's first romcom. It's told like a fairy tale and there are some interesting uses of colors and lighting. It features some great casting choices with Ossie Davis, Abe Vigoda (from Barney Miller), Lloyd Bridges, and Carol Kane.

Having spent the last week in Manchester, visiting the beer festival among other things, I missed what "Inaccueweather" claim were some cold nights here
-3C on Weds 23/01
and
-5C on Thurs 24/01

Anyway
there is a possibility of snow tomorrow into Weds could be interesting and only about 2CM ie less than an inch.

After a high of 73 yesterday we're back down to the mid 30s this morning after a cold front arrived late in the evening, when it all got a bit breezy. There was a gust at the airport of 49mph. And next weekend? Back to the mid 70s smiley - online2long

In London: As to the snow there was a minor dusting on garage rooves and cars, none on the ground.
Odd little snow flurries today but nothing sticking and it's mostly sunny and 3.5C
There is also a Snow / Ice warning for tomorrow into Friday, could be fun as I have to drive down to Ropley...
and for added fun Freezing fog tomorrow morning.

However in Manchester
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-47054419
So I dodged it by a couple of days.

I have the National Weather Service three-day observation page bookmarked for a handful of cities, including, obviously, both NWS Austin stations, Camp Mabry and the airport. One of them is Yuma, for the heat, and another is Fargo, for the cold. Where it was bloody cold yesterday. This reading will disappear within a few days, being a continually updated page, so get it while you can. At 16.53 on January 29th 2019, the wind chill was -56°F/-48.9°C http://w1.weather.gov/data/obhistory/KFAR.html And that's not the coldest temperature recorded yesterday. There were some in the -60s.

I was half listening to the radio this morning so I wasn't surprised when I misheard "The Dakotas are closed today".

I might assume I missed the prelude to that being something like "Due to the extreme cold conditions, postal service in Minnesota ... and The Dakotas are closed today".

Once again I'm left wondering how the forecast for one of the days next week (Wednesday - from 64 to 78) can jump by more than 10° in the space of 24 hours smiley - huh

We haven't had too many warm spells like the one that's starting this weekend. This winter really does feel like a winter. And I learned last night that yesterday's record low for the date of -2° (-18.9°C) is Austin's record low, bar none.

Last nights snow did arrive, but only a thin smattering here in SW London.
All now washed off by light rain this morning
Temp was +3C but is now dropping towards freezing during the afternoon.
Could make life Slippy later.
Elsewhere much more snow to the west of London.
