Pretty sure it is the end of summer from the rain we had here in the Coachella Valley last night.

No proper updates as I am only using my phone, today on the Isle of Wight felt like high summer I'm a normal year, about 23c this afternoon in the sun.
Only downside is rain forecast for tomorrow.

Apparently Camp Mabry had a whisker short of an inch and a half of rain just before midnight last night. The airport got virtually nothing.

Yesterday at work was another one of those Houston-like days. There was a 100° heat index at the airport during the afternoon and at around that time I had to leave the floor and sit in the air conditioned office for ten minutes.

The forecast for today is a degree or two warmer than yesterdays, which was several degrees cooler than the day actually turned out smiley - cross

Next week is looking more like January (average max/min 61/41) than October now. Certainly not like the October of 2015, which looked more like August.

Yesterday 84/69 (40% chance of rain) (actual: 90/68, 1.48" rain)
Today 84/71 (50% chance of rain)
Monday 51/48 (80% chance of rain)
Tuesday 50/46 (80% chance of rain)
Wednesday 57/46 (20% chance of rain)
Thursday 62/50 (40% chance of rain)

It's still warm in here - the display on the a/c controller reads 76° and I'm walking around in a t-shirt but I don't expect that to last, and it certainly won't be that high tomorrow morning. It's just residual warmth. The warmth of an entire summer. It doesn't take long to dissipate once the cold weather (finally) arrives, and especially not when it arrives as fiercely as this. And it's just started raining.

Yesterday 84/71 (50% chance of rain) (actual: 90/67, 0.14" rain)
Today 51/48 (80% chance of rain)
Tuesday 49/43 (80% chance of rain)
Wednesday 52/46 (40% chance of rain)
Thursday 59/50 (70% chance of rain)
Friday 65/55 (60% chance of rain)
Saturday 67/56 (40% chance of rain)
Sunday 68/57 (20% chance of rain)

Average max/min for this time of the year: 82/61

Record low temperature for today: 44 (1914)

After a respite of an hour or so (and ¾" of rain so far), it's just started chucking it down again. It's been around 45°/46° for the past six hours with wind chills of 39°-41°. That's the day after a high of 90° with a heat index of 99° smiley - cdouble

Between around 7am yesterday and midnight the temperature didn't go above 46° or below 44°. Then it was 47° for four hours, and has only just now climbed to 48°. Apart from a few periods of inactivity the rain was steady and relentless all day. Thankfully the wind has died down.

There's a lot of flooding around Texas this morning. The Llano River, which flooded a few weeks ago, is predicted to reach 40' today. Flood level is 10' http://twitter.com/NWSSanAntonio/status/1052161096130469888 There have been rainfall totals of close to 10" in the past 24 hours around the region.

I think we must be getting close to the clocks going back. That usually happens towards the end of October, doesn't it? I hope it doesn't happen the weekend of either the 27th/28th or November 3rd/4th. I'm off both those weekends so I wouldn't be able to appreciate the extra hour before having to get up and get ready for work on the Sunday morning.

Yesterday 51/48 (80% chance of rain) (actual: 70/44, 1.65" rain)
Today 49/43 (80% chance of rain)

Sorry, it did indeed get pushed back to 4 November.

I used to have a great bar bet.

"What is the second shortest month of the year, after February?"

It was April. There was no tricky wording involved, April was one hour shorter than other 30 day months due to losing an hour to DST.

This one was better than the more straightforward question of "which is the longest month" which was October until Bush pushed the end of DST back three weeks further.

I'm seriously considering boycotting DST at least as far as my own circadian rhythm is concerned. I can pretty much set my own hours at work so I'm thinking about next "Spring" when everyone else grumbles their way to work, while I go ahead and set my clocks forward as well, I'll change my work schedule to 7-5:30 from my current schedule of 6-4:30 M-Th.

Oh bother.

I like that bet. Mind if I use it myself? It might not be difficult to stay on summer time if you don't have too much contact with the outside world. Each time you do something like go to a bar or some other kind of place that has set hours, or listen to the radio, they're going to be an hour off your time. Personally, I wouldn't mind hibernating through winter, with a brief period of waking for Christmas.

There's major flooding going on in the Hill Country to the west and north west of Austin. In fact there's currently a flash flood warning for west Travis County mere miles from whatever-it-is-I'm-calling-this-place now. For our non-Texas readers, there is a series of flood control/water storage dams along the Colorado River to the west of and in Austin, which have created lakes, as dams do. During that awful summer of 2011 some of them diminished to a mere puddle, relatively speaking, and they've recovered since then. After this week's rain they're full enough that they all have floodgates open releasing water and moving it down the river. All the other rivers are having to deal with the excess water on their own, which means flooding. At least one bridge has been swept away as well as many homes and buildings. It's a historic flood.

As far as this weather report is concerned, yesterday's mean temperature was 48°, which is a departure from the average for this time of the year of -23°.

Yesterday 49/43 (80% chance of rain) (actual: 50/46, 0.74" rain)

Feel free to try that bar bet, but it rather spoils it when you have to preface with "Ok... pretend it's before 2006..." smiley - laugh

We're seeing a lot of the flooding footage around Llano on TV. Looks awful. smiley - sadface

I went to the Texas RenFest this past weekend. The weather was nice if just a bit warm, but I really couldn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked as I came down with some GI infection that rather ruined my first trip in my camper. Well, then again, I was never so happy to have a camper with it's own bathroom, even as small as it is.

It'll probably be 80° on Christmas Day smiley - tongueout

It looks like we've already had about a tenth of an inch of rain this morning, and plenty on the radar. I have to go to work at our old place this morning. That means going over the Longhorn dam, the one that forms Town Lake (Lady Bird lake, I believe we're calling it these days). I'm going to try and sit on the right hand side of the bus so I can get a shot of the river downstream, but it's a Friday morning rush hour so I might not be able to get a window seat, and it might still be dark anyway. It won't work on the way home because you can't see downstream from that side of the road.

That's if the road is even open. It's one of the two in Austin that might close due to flooding, and one lane of the other - Cesar Chavez underneath the Lamar Bridge has already had one lane closed. If the road over the dam is shut I've no idea how I'll get to work in a timely manner.

Yesterday's departure from the average temperature: -14°F.

A miracle! I actually had to open my umbrella smiley - ok Only for a couple of minutes while standing at the bus stop, but it counts.

Mansfield Dam still has four flood gates open so there's still a lot of flooding happening. It was barely light when I went over the Longhorn Dam so the video I took shows almost nothing, but the river, while much enlarged, wasn't raging.

After a relatively quiet weekend, even a very pleasant, warm, dry and almost idyllic day on Sunday, we're about to plunge (no pun intended) back into the the rain, thanks to a couple of Pacific hurricanes that are about to pass over Mexico and head towards Texas.

The floods of last week have overwhelmed the local water treatment works because of the silt in the water, resulting Austin Water's first ever boil water notice. With the rain that's forecast this week I doubt it'll go away in the immediate future.

Yesterday 69/59 (20% chance of rain) (actual: 74/56, no rain)
Today 62/52 (50% chance of rain)
Tuesday 63/51 (60% chance of rain)

And, naturally, people have gone into panic mode. "As soon as the boil water notice was issued, water bottles flew off H-E-B shelves in Austin." smiley - facepalm

I'm not sure what good a 5,000 gallon tanker is going to do. That wouldn't even fill one of our 20 smiley - cider tanks.
