It really doesn't seem that long ago that in the middle of our winters, I would occasionally turn on my auto A/C JUST for maintenance, to lubricate the system, rather than to keep from sweating. I haven't had to do that in several years.

"None of the four South Central Texas climate sites dropped below 60 degrees during the month of September, which is when the average first low below 60 degrees occurs. With temperatures not forecast to fall below 60 degrees through October 11, some locations this year may see their latest dates to fall below 60 degrees for any autumn on record."

I haven't been outside yet today, but my app says it's cooler, and I'm going to guess humid. In the 60s today, but back in the 80s for the rest of the week. Had a nice cool stretch last week, a Fall preview of sorts. We've had the windows open several times in recent weeks, and I've kept a jacket handy for evenings. But the AC is still "on" (even if it isn't actively running at the moment).

I think we were going to try to hit the Renaissance Faire this weekend, but may get rained out smiley - blue

How are you, gents?

Our Texas Renaissance Festival is occurring now as well. I'm assuming you're not going to that one. Let me guess. Kansas? I've been hearing that Kansas' is open now as well.

Also, today has been one of the sweatiest smiley - wah days I've experienced all year long. I've been dripping sweat just standing still! Even worse standing than when walking! There was no breeze this morning and 80% humidity at 86°. Maybe it's this new "barbecue" shirt. I thought the description was for recommended activity, not the slow cooking I'm getting wearing it.

It's been unpleasantly humid here for at least a week. Not quite Houston humid but not far off it. And there's at least five or six more days of it to come, despite two 'cold' fronts in quick succession, one at the weekend and another early in the week. Bad timing for the Red River Showdown, the State Fair, and the first weekend of ACL Fest.

That 0.19" of rain in that Camp Mabry recorded yesterday happened in the space of about ten minutes, just before 10 pm. I was in the bathroom cleaning me choppers and I heard a ferocious pounding that always signals a heavy downpour. I make that a rainfall rate of about 1.2" an hour.

So far this month, the mean daily temperature has been 4, 6, 8 and 8 degrees above average, and the average hot and cold temperatures for those first four days of the month are 89.3 and 73.3. See below for where we ought to be at. It's far too warm at night for this time of the year. At least there are some 60s in the forecast towards the end of next week.

I'm always happy to see you posting again broe smiley - smooch Nothing much changes here at whatever-it-is-I'm-calling-this-place now (I really must copy that to a file so I can copy and paste it instead of having to type it out each time... or find a name for it that I can remember). More things ache than before, and the things that ached already ache more than they did before. Somehow, Dewey smiley - cat is still alive (he'll be old enough to vote next year, if he makes it that long), and is bothering the former Mrs Gosho and her husband by waking them up two or three times a night just to make sure everyone is still there. Bless smiley - bigeyes

Greebo smiley - cat is old enough to vote, but I don't believe he'll make it to drinking age. smiley - sadface His last vet visit turned up kidney disease. He's been drinking and peeing more than usual but he still got a very healthy appetite so he's still pretty good, but it's just a matter of time now. He's about as old as h2g2 itself.

Dewey has had problems with various organs including kidneys and thyroid, and Mrs G has him him on a couple of pills a day. He's just about completely blind and you can see that it hurts him to stand up and walk around. He still remembers his old dad though whenever I go to visit smiley - biggrin

Yesterday I think I came about as close to a lightning strike as I've ever been, or want to be, at least while awake. There was one here several years ago that split a tree in two a couple of hundred yards from whatever-it-is-I-was-calling-that-one back then, and I'm pretty certain it woke me up.

Yesterday morning at work I was taking some things outside to the dumpster. There'd been some thunder already but it hadn't started raining yet. As I was walking back in (right past a huge mound of lightning-inducing metal by the way - our stash of kegs) I happened to be looking across to my left. I saw the flash, heard the sizzle, and immediately (not *almost* immediately) the crack of the thunder. It couldn't have been more than 400 yards away. Quite spectacular, if a little smiley - yikes

The rain record from Camp Mabry is misleading. It was another one of those days where one place might get a thunderstorm and a drenching, while a mile or two away there's nothing. The airport received almost half an inch from that storm that almost fried me.

It looks as if we've already had some rain this morning too, only the other way round - Camp Mabry has had 0.19" but the airport only 0.01".

And apparently that 0.19" was all that was seen, even though we had exactly the same pattern yesterday as on Saturday - heavy, thundery showers coming up from the coast, and some of them passing directly over Austin.

We're into the second week of October. It's still above 80° in here when I get up in the morning and I'm still (mostly) sleeping on top of the covers without a sheet over me because it's too warm. And the humidity these past two weeks has been horrible.

However, change may be around the corner. Details to follow tomorrow.

There has been an awful lot of rain out to the west and down by the Texas/Mexico border these past few days. I follow the Austin and San Antonio off ice of the National Weather Service on Twitter and I've been seeing so many flash flood watches and warnings, severe thunderstorm watches and warnings, and one or two tornado warnings. Now that the water has made it into the rivers there are flood warnings too. This shows how a river goes from calm one moment, to a lethal torrent moments later. It doesn't gradually rise http://twitter.com/AlbertR_KVUE/status/1049422353938214914

About half of that 0.96" of rain we got yesterday fell in one downpour of about 39 minutes around lunchtime.

Our forecast for today incudes a potential for some severe storms in the afternoon followed by cooler air and temperatures, hopefully driving out the humidity. I think I shall have to move my cacti back from the front of the balcony before it arrives. They've already had more than enough water these past few days.

And then look at the forecast for next Monday after the weekend cold front arrives smiley - bigeyes

Yesterday 86/72 (40% chance of rain) (actual: 84/72, 0.96" rain)

Back around 1980, I was camping with with a few families along the Guadalupe River when a tropical storm came over the region. In the middle of the night the river started rising quickly, not as quickly as in that video, but still quite quickly. We were camped close to the river bank (that campground reserves that area for day camping only now) and had to scramble to get everything to high ground. There was a San Marcus student who we met a few times there camped next to us. The water woke him in his pup tent. He scrambled out the high end of it and tried to pull the whole tent up at once. Unfortunately his car keys dropped out the other end. His car was nearly washed away but the campground staff got their back hoe and towed it to high ground just in time. Amazingly, the next morning an old fellow with a metal detector found his keys the next morning in the loess at the river side behind a line of cypress trees.

I'd say the water rose about 15 feet in as many minutes.

Had some flash flooding here in the foothills of Joshua Tree Nat. Forest W 3 Oct 2018.

Successfully avoided going into a skid on a sandbar across the road, had to ford four still flowing streams in normally dry washes going home after getting drenched in cloudburst and a long soak in a hot tub earlier in the evening.

Season's off to a good start in other words.

No further weather immediately in sight.

First day without AC since last spring S 7 Oct 2018.

All in all, yesterday's cold front was, quite literally, a damp squib. I heard a few rumbles of thunder, but the predicted severe weather was conspicuous by its absence. No hail, no damaging winds, and even the rainfall wasn't as heavy as the downpour we had on Monday. But it drove away the humid air and gave us a fresher (and foggy) morning today smiley - biggrin

After having been almost 5" ahead on September's monthly rainfall average we're already another 1.17" ahead for October, which makes 1.3" on top for the year so far.

Next Monday's looking a bit smiley - brr There's a better than even chance that the heater will go on for the first time in months on either Monday or, almost certainly, Tuesday morning, at least for the duration of my morning shower.
