There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

We're just starting get some good rainfall here in Austin as the northern bands of rain wash over us. Not too windy yet though. As of early this morning:

Preliminary 24 hour rainfall totals so far include:
Victoria 16.43”
Austwell 11.36”
Colorado River at Bay City 8.58”
Matagorda 7.67”
La Grange 4.75”
Lockhart 1.13”

We'll probably beat today's rainfall record of 3.55" in 2001. We've had 0.88" since midnight, but 0.72" of that fell in the last hour.

Yeah, people. Stupidity just seems to grow rather than diminish. No doubt before bottled water was so ubiquitous, filling containers is what would have been the norm, but now it's just easier to not think about it until you need it, then go out and buy it, and discard it afterwards. Far more convenient and efficient than having great big empty things lying around that you might only need once a decade smiley - rolleyes

Yesterday 93/75 (50% chance of storms) (actual: 90/7, 0.21" rain)
Today 83/75 (90% chance of rain)
Sunday 76/72 (90% chance of rain)
Monday 81/70 (50% chance of rain)
Tuesday 84/72 (30% chance of rain)
Wednesday 85/72 (30% chance of storms)
Thursday 88/71 (20% chance of storms)
Friday 90/71

Average for this time of the year: 96/74
Record high temperature for yesterday: 105 (1924)
Record high temperature for today: 107 (1924)

Part of the routine around here is to fill the bathtub, not for drinking, but to fill the toilet tank with a bucket so you can flush it.

The people who manage this apartment complex suggest filling the bath for drinking water smiley - yuk Personally I'd rather have a separate container for that, and use the bath all other water needs.

It's actually not been too bad here today, so far. Certainly no worse than November gales I've experienced back home. We've had rain virtually the whole day and it's been very windy, but we're still just shy of 3" since this morning. I'm sure we'll get more since the storm is virtually stationary about 1000 miles to the south, and we're getting all the rain bands around the northern side of it. This has been the picture all day long http://pbs.twimg.com/media/DIMbiSqUwAA3z18.jpg

My lights have flickered a few times this evening, and we passed our rainfall record record for the day about two hours ago (it's just above 4" currently, but there's plenty more to come). The airport has recorded 5.95" since midnight with gusts mostly in the 40s mph, and one gust of 54mph only an hour or two ago. Where I work is closer to the airport than to Mabry, and I can tell you that the building was making some noises I've never heard it make before smiley - yikes

The rainfall rates have been fluctuating all day from about a quarter of an inch an hour to a half an inch.

The deepest red bands of rain on that picture above are the ones that'll be affecting CZ the most, and they keep rolling over the same areas time after time.

The winds haven't abated overnight, nor the rain. I'm wondering whether it's worth bothering with my umbrella, which will probably blow inside out, or just get wet and dry my clothes out at work.

Nearly 24" of rain so far, 8+ inches between 0300 and 0730. My parents downstairs have been up since 3am when water started coming into their bedroom. All three bedrooms got water damage. The carpets and hardwood floors will have to be replaced.

We might have been unaffected if we had better drainage. I went down the street with a hoe and cleared the ditches and culverts as best as I can. Hopefully we won't get rain like last night again. Over the years the county has built the roads up higher than the surrounding property, damming the flood water. Before the water would just rise up ti the streets then flow over. We live close to the bay so it doesn't have far to flow.

We've never had water this high before. Our damage is minimal compared to others I know who had feet of water in their homes. And there are many areas where people are climbing onto their roofs and into their attics (dangerous).

Glad there's (comparatively) minor damage BG. Some of the photos I've seen from around Houston (and other areas) are awful.

The winds in Austin have subsided but it's still pretty breezy, and there's a steady light rain. I didn't take my umbrella to work this morning, and didn't really need it - there was more wind than rain. And coming home just now I got a little wet without it, but not drenched to the skin.

Did you see the eclipse, broe? I know it passed through southern parts of St Louis.

I did! Went to a friend's house to avoid the crowds and traffic (even though I could have avoided it completely by staying home, I was on the very edge of totality). We got about two and a half minutes of totality. It was amazing. Already thinking about where to go in 2024! (Texas is a possibility!)

I'm excited about that. There was one in the far south west of Britain in 1999, a few weeks before I left for Texas. I'd known about it since I was still at school and promised myself I'd be there (I promised myself I'd be retired by then too smiley - rolleyes). Naturally, life got in the way, and when the eclipse happened I was asleep after having worked through the night. Not that I'd have seen it anyway, whether in London or Cornwall - it was cloudy that day so it was all but invisible smiley - sadface

That's astonishing. I remember the day that Cheapo flooded we had a little over 10" of rain in 12 hours, but then it stopped. And a couple of years ago, during the Halloween flood, the airport got 5.76" of rain in one hour (after 1.27" the previous hour), but then it stopped. And on Memorial Day earlier that year, well, I don't know what the actual rainfall was during that hour I left for home, but in a very short space of time the streets turned into rivers and that hour turned into two. But then it stopped.

So it's easy the get used to heavy rainfall here in Texas, even blasé about it, but what's happened with Harvey is mind-boggling.

And now the sun's out in Austin.

Harvey has left the Austin area now, and will hopefully move away from Houston soon. The biggest rain total (since Friday) I've seen locally is 29.09" near Smithville.

Harvey has made this all rather insignificant, but recently I've been looking back at the posts I made here in August 2011, particularly the past two days and today when we had maximum temperatures of 110, 112 and 109 smiley - headhurts

The average daytime temperature has dropped from 98 a few weeks ago, to 95 now. I wonder if we'll stick at 42 scorchios smiley - bigeyes Probably not. I think some time in October is the latest recorded scorchio for Austin, and our first instance of 112 was during the first week in September.

Yesterday 80/70 (70% chance of rain) (actual: 86/70, 0.06" rain)
Today 81/70 (40% chance of rain)
Wednesday 87/72 (20% chance of rain)
Thursday 91/71
Friday 92/71 (10% chance of rain)
Saturday 92/73 (10% chance of rain)
Sunday 94/71 (10% chance of rain)
Monday 90/74 (30% chance of storms)

Average for this time of the year: 95/74
Record high temperature for yesterday: 112 (2011)
Record high temperature for today: 109 (2011)

We added 10.58" to the rain totals for the 24 hour period ending at 7am this morning (29 Aug). That's 38.14" since Friday and we've added a couple more inches to that this morning putting us over 40".
