Currently 86 and Sunny in the Gateway city... Considerably drier than the east coast, and moderately more moist than the southwest.

Very succinctly put, broe smiley - biggrin

It's definitely going to be a warm one here today. We'd hit 105 before 1pm.

Some more numbers:
July 2011 was the hottest month ever in Austin with an average temperature of 89.7 degrees. So far August is averaging more than 91 and will almost certainly claim the title.

100 Degree Days in August: The current record is 27. We’ve had 24 so far and the forecast calls for four more before September 1st.

Days of 100+: 2011 is currently in first place with 72 days and counting. The previous record was 69 in 1925.

Days of 105+: 2011 is currently at 20 days. The current record is 22 in 1925.

And the forecast:

109 Sunday (scorchio no. 73)
106 Monday (scorchio no. 74)
103 Tuesday (scorchio no. 75)
101 Wednesday (scorchio no. 76)
99 Thursday, 20% chance of rain
98 Friday, 30% chance of rain
95 Saturday, 40% chance of rain

Seems it's only the third time we've ever hit 110 in Austin - today, August 8th 2003 and September 4th 2000. We've never recorded a maximum of 111, and our hottest ever day was 112 on September 5th 2000.

All four since 2000. But there's no such thing as global warming. Just coincidence.

Thanks broe smiley - hug

One thing I forgot to mention yesterday was that when I got home from work around 2pm my a/c was on. I turn the thermostat up to about 80 when I leave in the morning and slide it back down a few degrees to something more comfortable when I get home, which I did yesterday afternoon. This last month or so it's always been running when I get home.

It didn't stop running until about 10pm. It didn't get cold enough until then for the thermostat to turn it off. And when it did go off it was only for about five or ten minutes before the thermostat turned it back on.

And overnight we didn't go below 80.

The forecast has changed again:

109 Sunday (scorchio no. 73)
107 Monday (scorchio no. 74)
104 Tuesday (scorchio no. 75)
101 Wednesday (scorchio no. 76)
97 Thursday, 20% chance of rain or storms
97 Friday, 20% chance of rain or storms
97 Saturday, 20% chance of rain or storms
97 Sunday, 20% chance of rain or storms

Man, if it rains and the temperature is still in the upper 90s it's going to feel worse than 108 and dry smiley - sadface

Just about to leave for work, not even 10am and it's already hit 90. It's all downhill after today, that's really the only way to look at it.

Breaking my rule again about logging on at work.

At Camp Mabry, which is one of the two official National Weather Service stations for Austin (the other one being the airport) it was:
105/40.6 by 11.51
108/42.2 by 12.51
109/42.8 by 13.51

According to the unofficial weather station downtown it hit 111/43.9 at 2.20pm. Still a couple of hours before the hottest part of the day.

I went and stood outside, just because. It didn't feel too bad because the humidity is at 15%, but you can't touch any bare metal. Not if you want to avoid getting burned.

We're at 45% humidity which is quite low for us normally but with temps in the triple digits its like an oven. It is now absolutely too hot to ride the motorcycle in the afternoon. Yesterday I rode to pick up some new glasses at around 2:30. People ask me if my mesh jacket is hot but it actually keeps me just a bit cooler by keeping the sun off me, but yesterday I was really appreciating it. My finger tips which were uncovered could feel the radiative heat from the asphalt. It was like being caught between two suns.

My parents A/C quit on them last night. My dad moved to the RV but Mom toughed it out with just a fan and stayed in the house. They found an emergency A/C service that sent a young guy out this morning. It turned out to just be a bad connector so it was a pretty cheap fix.

AARGH... I was watching a recorded show and it just ended and switched back to live TV. I have to get to the remote because the current show is Armageddon. The stupid.... it burns! smiley - headhurts

I wouldn't want to come off my bike wearing one of those... or nothing at all smiley - yikes That's some serious road rash. There's a good reason why bikers wear heavy leathers during the summer.

So, I've just made it home - a five minute wait at the bus stop, a ten minute bus journey and a five minute walk to my apartment. It's stupid hot out there. Like, Arizona hot. The kind of hot that burns the inside of your nostrils when you breath in. The kind of hot that makes you wish the wind wouldn't blow, even a zephyr, because it's like standing far too close to a raging fire.

The official temperature at 15.51 was 111. The unofficial temperature at 3.06pm was 112. So we've broken the record for hottest temperature in August (used to be 110) and we could well equal - or surpass - the hottest temperature ever recorded in this city.

Speaking of humidity (we were at one point, weren't we?), Saturday I washed my dog on the porch out of the sun. An entire day later there were still a couple of small puddles on the concrete. smiley - huh I really don't understand how they lasted that long in this heat and with a reported 45% humidity. I have to think that that report was just wrong and we are in the sauna it feels like down here.

That's strange.

Yes, we were talking about humidity, about how it's going to feel worse this weekend in the upper 90s with rain than it's been feeling at 105 and above, but dry.

I think I heard the announcer on KUT this morning say that today will break the record for the highest number of 105+ days in a year... or maybe we broke it yesterday. I can't remember. Either way, I'm over it all. I've had it up to here with this summer. But let's do this again anyway:

106 Tuesday (scorchio no. 75)
103 Wednesday (scorchio no. 76)
100 Thursday, 30% chance of rain (scorchio no. 77)
96 Friday, 20% chance of rain or storms
97 Saturday, 20% chance of rain
99 Sunday, 20% chance of rain
96 Monday, 20% chance of rain
94 Tuesday, 30% chance of rain or storms

That was very neat. I love the way you can see clouds developing over land in a few instances, Cuba particularly.

It was also interesting seeing the contraflow[?], the clockwise wind patterns along the leading edge of the storm.
