Maybe not, but you have to remember that there are probably a lot of entertainers from back then who are forgotten, and also think about newer celebs like Clapton, Bowie, Beck (Jeff, that is), Page, Plant, Jagger, Townsend etc who have kept going and achieved longevity. The advantages that the earlier ones had are that they came up through music hall and doing the circuit, then made it really big when television came along, and television wasn't so fragmented back then so they had more of a captive audience.

I can't really think of too many people today though who you can say are all-round entertainers who can hold an audience in so many ways - act, tell jokes, sing, dance, compère etc. Although they don't have the same kind of gravitas as Bygraves, Forsyth, Howerd etc, I reckon Reeves and Mortimer might be a closely comparable act today.

I suppose we should include Tarby as well, although what has he done during the past 20 - 30 years other than play golf?

You'll never see a nipple in the Daily Express... despite the fact he plastered them all over the Star.

Sad about that. I used to enjoy his late night radio programme and I have a CD of music chosen by him somewhere. Surprisingly good taste. smiley - sorry that sounds pompous but you know what I mean.

I do know what you mean. Despite his questionable ideas for selling newspapers I had a good deal of respect for him. A very intelligent man.

The inspiration for Dinsdale Piranha?

I love it when news reports use the formal name of someone with a well known soubriquet. It always seems so... stuffy: "Edward Richardson, Roy Hall, Francis Fraser and Thomas Charles Clark"

That would be Mad Frankie Fraser smiley - biggrin

Sometimes they don't even use the real name, like when The Times called the lead guitarist and vocalist of The Clash 'Mr Joseph Strummer' in a news item about him being arrested for some minor offence smiley - laugh

Despite the fact that he foisted The Osmonds upon us I was a huge fan of The Andy Williams Show, at least after it got a bit Rowan and Martin and started including Cookie Bear and Captain Weird (Charlie Callas) smiley - rofl

Forever associated with the Pink Panther series and Inspector Clouseau, but let's not forget his role in The Ladykillers, among other films over a very long career.

Not a top celebrity by any stretch of the imagination but very distinctive. Not a good picture either. Here's a better one, from that scene in The Italian Job http://lh3.ggpht.com/_axffduAi2BA/SMVHD7JgrgI/AAAAAAAAAow/zio8FspV-yA/s640/John+Clive2.JPG

I fancied watching a film this afternoon but I couldn't decide which one. I think this has made the decision for me.

Very sad. He had just completed a brand new series of Dallas with some of the other original cast members and it was brilliant, probably better than the original ones. There was talk of a follow up but I guess it wouldn't work without him.

I bet he was pleased to have done that as his swansong.

Dallas was my guilty pleasure for a while. It was the 'Pammy's dream' series smiley - bigeyes That shower scene at the end was used by some other show, with Patrick Duffy and Victoria Principal, and for the life of me I can't remember what it was smiley - huh

Oh wait, it was Family Guy smiley - biggrin

I heard today there is another series in the making, and they are going to write his death in to it. I guess they were too far on with it to stop so he may be in the early episode.

I loved the programme and the new one was very good. I love the music too. Those were the days when everyone watched the same things and talked about them the next day, or week(s) as when the 'Who Shot JR' saga was running.

He had an amazing long life since he seemed intent on abusing his body throughout.
