First Draft
I came here because I'm addicted to Douglas Adam's writing. My active interests are music and physics, but not in that order.
Physics:
My day gig and, still, a passion. For better or worse, it is a consistent framework. Specifically, I'm a solid state theorist. My physics is clearly lower case-- theory of defects in solids.
Music:
I studied classical piano for ~ seven years. In high school, my parents quietly decided that I should stop lessons, lest I get serious about it. Since graduate school, I have, with varying degrees of commitment, studied and played jazz piano. I would say that my commitment has increased dramatically over the last ten years. I am now playing fairly regularly in local clubs with some very fine musicians. Each gig is as much a lesson as anything else.
I hear often that it's wonderful to do these two activities, because they are such natural complements. I have not found it so. Physics is not done in time. In fact, nearly the opposite. In music, time is almost everything. Time is my constant challenge. It's part of the reason I stayed at H2G2. I plan to journal my quest for better time. Currently, I think this is probably the deepest thing I have tried to master because I think it will require a fundamental change in my approach to life.
If your still reading, you have probably surmised that I am very focused, even narrow. Well, you're right. I do read and have favored authors, movies, musicians, etc. But really, I'm looking for a nice place to keep track of where I'm going musically.
