Accounting for Everyone
Ever since I started my first company in 1979 I had a desire to a) understand computers, and b) write an accounting app to make running the business easier. A simple statement you may think, but the truth was, I was a frustrated rock star! Frustrated because every song I wrote was, well, crap.
This was because, just like accounting, I really hadn't got a clue. This as we all know is the only way to become an expert on something. Some years after moving on and starting a software company, a potential customer phoned (an accountant), asked me a few simple questions, which I answered, and followed up with 'well, you are obviously no accountant!'. That was all I needed. The red rag. I then forced myself into really understanding what the hell it was I had managed to create.
And about ten years later, I finally got it. Woohooo. I even wrote a book about it, I was that chuffed. So, what on earth am I doing in h2g2? Simple, I want to spread the word about double-entry (and multiple-entry) accounting. What could possibly be a more interesting subject for this guide? I certainly can't think of one. Oh, and if there is, I would bet anything you will find it here anyway. So, in the immortal words, 'so long, and thanks for all the fish'.
