Xantief,
This is literature that needs to be read aloud to really be appreciated.
It would make a good performance piece.
Laden with assonance, eg:
'light aligned'
'upon proud stones'
'moon/cool'
'bowl/stone'...it goes on!
And alliteration, eg:
'wayward wind whistles',
'those stone'(alliteration);
Also assonance: 'massive adamant anchored.'
The whole piece is shot through with these beautiful internally rhyming adjacent words. Readers should 'listen' for those as they follow the story. This is the work of a man who thoroughly knows his craft.
I do not know anything about the classical origins of Xantief's plot, but it is an entertaining read.
alliteration: 'precise placement... perfect circle...people prepared'
I am also very glad that there are some left who know the precise meaning and usage of 'nicety'. I thought they had all died off to be replaced by those who think it means 'being nice' (pleasant). Or 'to hell with the niceties of dining formally' type of remark.
I could wax lyrical on this all the bloody way through, but I ain't got the time.
