"Well, I tell you what, you write me an introduction and I'll tell you what's wrong with it"
That's what I told my daughter, Joanna, when she stressed the vital importance of editing one's user page after becoming a researcher...
Who am I?
I am a maths tutor living in South Manchester. I have always been a teacher, firstly in secondary schools in this country, then I worked for five years in Kenya, and finally I decided that the classroom was no longer for me (I didn't want to be a policeperson, it seems to me that that is what we expect teachers to be these days) and started doing private tuition.
I don't have internet access. I rely on Joanna in the (albeit unlikely) event that I want to post something. I have a user page because she asks and asks me about her entries, and I've agreed to help her write one. So apologies if I don't reply... blame my daughter
Who was Hypatia?
Hypatia was a Greek mathematician, and she lived around AD 370-415. She wrote commentaries on Diophantus and Apollonius, and is an example of the fact that women have always been players in the interllectual life of the world. They may have been largely overlooked but they were there. If I could really see the point of a role model, she'd probably be mine.
It has been brought to my attention that since my daughter is the Princess of Darkness, I must be Queen of something. I chose the Night, to continue with her theme.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
