However, we could just send out an h2g2 cuddly toy rhino and the rhino will clock up the travel miles. You can take pictures of the cuddly toy rhino and submit them as well as writing text with where the researcher took the rhino.

Narbonic is a comic by Shaennon Garrity, and her fans take the little stuffed gerbils everywhere and photograph them. She displayed the photos on Sundays.

I just mentioned it as some researchers, namely myself, are better writing factual stuff than fictional.

Before you go too far with this idea, you may wish to note that I had envisaged writing it myself - I did say 'with me as the traveller'.

I think that's a good idea, Rich. Get that rhino hiking!

No problem, Opti. I've always said I'd never hold overenthusiasm against anyone; it's better than apathy!

This is an idea that's been at the back of my mind for a few years now, actually (I first discussed it with Terri shortly after I joined the site). Maybe it's time to start doing something with it; I need a new challenge.

If you want to join me on my journey, first of all you'll have to imagine what you'd plan if I came to visit. It might be for a couple of hours, or for a weekend, and you can choose to have me do anything you like - take me to the pub and get me drunk, go and feed the ducks in the park, see the sights of your hometown, whatever. Once you've decided, write about what we 'did' while I was there. Feel free to predict my reactions to the things we do, make up little anecdotes, get me into fights or dancing on bars or helping old ladies across the road. It's entirely up to you; the only constraint is that it must be stuff that you think I might actually do.

When you're done, email it to me. I'll then work your writing into a wider travelogue. I'll invent my journey to you (I may have to do some serious research if it's places I haven't ever visited, which could be fun) and probably work in some of my real travelling experiences as well.

How does this sound?

I think it might be fun if we did it along the lines of one of those pick-your-own-adventure books, where we confront you with situations or give you options and let you decide/react...
