Thank you Shadow. I'm quite impressed with the quickness several people have exhibited in greeting me. Which makes the past hour, in which my home page and everything I'd written on it mysteriously vanished, a little easier to take. (It's back now, every bit as mysteriously.) And I'm Tom, Tom Collins, although I've been known to respond to Dog and worse.

I'm currently trying to come up with my first entry, on the drink Tom Collins, naturally. I may indeed take you up on your offer of help, as I'd like to include at least one picture, and I'm unclear on how to do that.

Well I think a lot of people have been experiencing the vanishing h2g2 recently, myself included earlier today. And I still do not know why. And I know nothing about pictures. Sorry....

Hi Tom... was just reading your scribblings... and thought me would tell you that if you are trying to make an official guide entry... then pictures are not allowed at the moment... sorry... You can put as many pictures as you like in your own pages... just not in accepted ones...

Remember with pictures though... they make your page longer to load...

To get a picture on your page... you first need to have the picture of your choice uploaded onto a server... so that h2g2 knows where to look for it... ~grin~... then all you have to do is... in GUIDEML ... if you are not using this ... change it when you create/edit a page...

1. Know the picture address.. i.e. http://www.h2g2.com/picture.gif

2. Add the picture tag... (the code that will put your picture on your page)

EMBED="CENTER" Set

Do you see where the link to the picture you want goes????

This code will place a picture in the middle of your page... if you want to see some other ways of placing pictures... go here...

Hope this helps... ~grin~

Thank you Greebo. I had actually already abandoned plans for a picture on my entry (for Tom Collins the drink - which has already been submitted), as it looked difficult, and I'm not all that bright. But thanks for the suggestions for a picture on my home page. Maybe someday, though not in the near future, I don't think.

Isn't Greebo also a Pratchett reference? What do you think is the cross-reference between Douglas Adams fans and Pratchett fans? About a 90, 95% match, is my guess.

Yes me did actually read your entry after me wrote my message... ~grin~... me likes your article... good luck with it... me did think that it didn't need a picture and me glad that you abandoned the idea anyhow...

Greebo is indeed from the imagination of Terry Pratchett... there are a lot of his fans on h2g2... and of course many Douglas Adams fans... Me doesn't know how many read both... but me would also bet that a lot do...

I for one do read both... Pratchett and Adams that is. And McCaffrey.

How could me ever forget Anne McCaffrey... ~grin~

I was wondering about that, Greebs, but I figured you just weren't thinking about it... smiley - smiley If you want to read about Anne McCaffrey, Greebo here has written a wonderful entry (still in progress) about her. What's that address, Greebo?

Hmmm...after doing a quick search I've noted a distressing lack of entries on one of MY favorite writers, Robert Ansolom Heinlein. Guess I'll have to get cracking, only problem is, there's SO much to say about him! Where DOES one start? Guess I need to go and get some inspiration from Greebo too! smiley - winkeye

smiley - smiley Well Greebo beat me to the finish line on Anne McCaffrey. Guess I'll have to go with my second favorite author- Laura Ingalls Wilder. Heard of her?

I grok you, Shadow. Heinlein is nifty, and Stranger in a Strange Land is a masterwork, but he got alarmingly obsesses with incest in his latter years, dontcha think? And Little House on the Prairie was more my sister's bag, Greebo, I'm afraid. I was readin Piers Anthony while she was reading Laura Ingalls.

Now Cormac McCarthy -- there's a writer. All the Pretty Horses (see the movie starring Matt Damon, directed by Billy Bob Thornton, coming this summer!), The Crossing, Cities on the Plain, Blood Meridian -- all brutal, lyrical masterpieces set in the murky territory between America and Mexico during the last century. He has a strange, compelling way, much like Faulkner, of making horrible violence poetic, even beautiful.
