I figured out how to do it, and how to reverse it! 
Hit Shift+ Alt.
Your keyboard will now type silly characters instead of chevrons and å ä ö etc.
Hit Shift+Alt again.
Other random stuff will be displayed as you type.
Repeat until sensible characters return.

Yes, this is very useful advice - but I think it's stupid of MS to have such an easily mistyped shortcut to switch your keyboard settings!
Sometimes I've had to use Shift+AltGr

Ooops - yesterday I also discovered that in some cases you need to hold down the Alt key *before* pressing Shift. I got pretty desperate before I figured that out!
