A Voice from another Century
I'm sorry not to have all the exciting occupations, hobbies, pets, and interests that many other writers have. I haven't even read h2g2, although it seems to be required reading for a particular generation. I did once read 'Zen and the Art of Motor Cycle Maintenance'. Does that count?
I'm getting to be quite ancient, although I never see myself as such. But anyone who was taken from school to watch the newly crowned King George 6th travelling past with his wife (most of you probably remember her as 'The Queen Mum')can claim a fair degree of antiquity.
I have a huge range of interests, mostly superficial. This results from having been impressed by a wonderfully forgiving expression I discovered in mid-life 'If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing badly'. For example,it's better to be able to speak some languages badly than not at all. Obviously it's better to be able to speak them well, but if you can't manage that, badly is better than nothing.
There are a few things that I know quite a bit about, polecats for example, but they're not the sort of thing that make for good after-dinner conversation.
I have wide tastes in music, with the exception of pops and Gilbert and Sullivan. Anything else, from Wagner to Jimi Hendrix, is my oyster.
I think Thomas Hardy is my favourite classical writer; Bill Bryson my favourite present day one. I love movies, especially old black and white ones. Like a lot of older folk, I think 'The Third Man' and 'Casablanca' have to be the greatest movies ever made.
So, what a mixed bag. I'll leave it there for now and update as seems fit.
