What Is The Rule of Thirds

I noticed this question in a photo conversation

This is it

An explanation if your point of interest where any of the lines cross it places your subject in a naturally artistically pleasing position in your photograph. You know what it works.

Check out the examples in the site link below.

https://uk.images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=A9mSs2PhBB5aNioAn1FLBQx.;_ylu=X3oDMTByZmVxM3N0BGNvbG8DaXIyBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzYw--?p=rULE+OF+THIRDS&fr=mcafee

Warning it works 50 to 65 percent of the time dont over do it, better still take 2 or 3 shots.

Have fun

Part 2
The horizontal lines are very useful to position the horizon or a divide between any horizontal feature.
The upright lines help to position Trees or tall buildings, the positioning of clouds or the moon the list is endless, just experiment it soon becomes second nature.

smiley - ok

Gotcha boss!

I love the Rule of Thirds. I like the title. smiley - rofl. Good titles for photos.

(Uh oh ... reawakens addiction to wordpaintings and picture titles.)

smiley - coffee

Rule of Thirds/The Jasmine Light Mix

Rule Of Third/Curious Shadow in North West Edge of Picture Is Psychological

smiley - coffee

I can't open the link in Brunel skin, so will have to change skins. A tight fitting lizard skin, perhaps. smiley - rofl.

I get the picture though. hah! The picture. The point of interest in a photo being not in the centre. Really into this.

I need to access info about those lines though. Does the link have lines?

Will change skins later, as have to cycle along the canal, with a cheese sandwich. And a bicycle of course.

Well done you have the grasp of the idea the theory, it makes you think about composition. Hope the cheese Sandwich enjoys the day outsmiley - winkeye

Yes! The time of sunsets. And lots of photogenic lights at dusk, lit up trains and lit up windows, lit up dogs etc.

Lit up dogs? smiley - dog. Yes, I keep seeing them out for their evening walk with flashing lights on their collars, and hi viz doggie jackets.

The cheese sandwich had a good day out. smiley - rofl. It no longer exists though. How mean I am to eat it, just when it was enjoying the scenery.

Ah! I opened the link in the other skin. Excellent! I get it with the lines.

Thanks Bob!

Glad to help, it was apparent that by instinct you were already partly using the rule anyway.
It will be easier for you now you are aware of the rule and understand it.

'scuse me for jumping into this thread, but I was rummaging in h2g2 this week and found an Entry about the Golden Ratio Phi A2346374 which cactuscafe might like as it is linked to the Rule of Thirds (little phi is about 2/3).

The Golden Ratio is my favourite number since I learned about it, mainly for its beautiful equations but also because of its involvement in natural compositions, art and photography smiley - biggrin

As bob says, it is a guide that isn't always right for a picture, as forcing it doesn't help, but when I've taken a photo I do check the lines and try aligning different focal points in accordance with the ratio (eg creatures' eyes) to see if any of the adjustments make the photo 'pop' and become better somehow smiley - ok

Ah interesting, SashaQ! Thanks!

The Golden Ratio.

Very wonderful and mysterious and miraculous.

I think the Golden Ratio also comes into one my favourite films, Pi, when Max Cohen is staring into his coffee cup, and realises things about headaches, spirals, Leonardo da Vinci, Fibonacci, and the Golden Ratio.

Ah! I've not seen Pi but I know staring into coffee/tea cups can be fascinating indeed! I like watching how the milk goes in like clouds in a dark sky...
