Tyne to the Rhein

I came to Germany thirty years ago for two weeks holiday. I settled near Nuremberg (thought I´d give it a trial) and am delighted that the England team will play here against Trinidad and Tobago in the summer. On paper England have a good team - on grass they´re hopeless. I ran a German-English magazine for a few years and did a few gigs in Irish pubs, my greatest achievement being to animate a crowd of Germans to sing the chorus of The Fog On The Tyne. They had no idea what they were singing but it didn´t seem to matter. Now that I´m old and grey I earn a few bob teaching English - yes I know a Geordie teaching English seems a little paradoxical, but with a bit of bluff you can get away with just about anything. Anyway, don´t be surprised if you are watching the England team on the telly and you hear the Germans shouting "howay the lads."
