pioneer women
Posted Jul 24, 2000
I am on a kick on reading diaries of women pioneers. I am finding they were a curious lot. If they didn't go crazy or died along the way. Most made the trip non the worse for the wear, and prospered greatly.
They speak of life and death with the indifference of small weather conversation you find while standing in line at the grocery store.
I read these diaries with great entheusiam and often to stop to compare to life these days. Most girls are married and have a household started by the age of 16. By 18 they have at least one child often as many as 3. Here I am 28 and I have one...I could not imagine having the amount that some of these women had. But then again, the actual number of children that lived to adulthood was not as good as it is now.
Wow...thank the Gods for being able to live in the here and now.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
