WidnesInVirginia, USA
I was born in West Bank, Widnes in 1931; was educated at West Bank Primary School, Widnes Central School, Widnes Junior Commercial School, and took evening classes at Widnes Technical Collage and at City of Liverpool College of Commerce.
I qualified as an Accountant in 1959 and left Widnes to find my fame and fortune in London area. As I say to friends, I did not find either, but had a great time looking !
I retired n 1996 and in 2003 I met and married an American lady, and now live in Virginia, USA.
I consider myself to have been particularly lucky in having been able to travel fairly extensively, though not as far, or as often, as I should have liked.
When I was a young boy, waiting at the Transporter Bridge for a "car" to Runcorn, I used to look longingly at the "Welsh Hills" as we called the range of mountains on the western horizon. I determined that when I was older I would go to those mountains to see them for myself.
When I started my first job, with Bush Chemicals on West Bank, and had some money of my own, I bought a bycycle and was introduced by a friend to the Widnes club of the Cycling Touring Club, and with them, found my way to the lovely mountains of Wales, among other great examples of nature's beauty.
Later a break-away club was formed, called The Woodend Wheelers (or was it Woodend Cycling Club?).
This love of mountains and countryside fits well into my present way of life, for I live in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. You will have heard the song, and it is true, for the trees on the mountains give of a blue haze under the sun, and this gives the mountains a blue cast from a short distance away.
My wife and I are both retired and both love travelling. We have been to 45 or the 50 states of the union, and travel to Europe whenever we can.
We hope to complete the remaining 5 states in the next few years. Not that this will make us experts on the 50 states, for it would take a lifetime to get to "know" even a small number of the States. But travelling through a state does give some idea of the size of this country, and the contrasts between states.
I would welcome contacts to chat over old times, changing lifestyles and despite change, the world remains the same.
