paulh, making lemonade from the lemons that life has given me

I'm removing the "s" ater the http, to get a clickable link

For what it's worth, I do see how strong women are.

Yes, they should have had at least the vote thousands of years ago, as well as equal pay for equal work.

At the extremes, some primitive societies expected women to sometimes plow the fields in addition to tending the children, households, etc. But not *own* the farms. Men had a lock on that. smiley - sadface But there was this thing called a dowry. And there were women who ran things covertly. Edith Wilson basically ran the U.S. while Woodrow was incapacitated.

re post 61:

It's not necessary to remove the 's' here, paulh. People can do that after clicking the links smiley - smiley

Sho - employed again!

thanks Paul,
Unfortunately it's getting worse here in Germany as the Covidiots are spreading their nonsense and i think people are sick of the measures.

We'll see how it goes. There is talk of a much stricter lockdown to come directly after Christmas.

Putting an entire society into near-solitary confinement can't be good for mental health. I'm not totally unsympathetic to the Covidiots, even as I deplore their lies.

There's a class system at work, too. People who can afford to stay home for extended periods are lucky. The unlucky ones often work delivering things to the people who stay at home. This gives them more exposure to the virus, and they get sick disproportionately.

Pierre, I always remove the 'S'es. If you're not viewing h2g2 in Pliny, the links with the 'S'es don't actually create links. So by removing the 'S', I save the reader the huge ordeal of highlighting, copying, and pasting the link into a new window. smiley - winkeye

I almost always use Brunel so I appreciate the links that work. However, I could see someone making a case for leaving the 'S'es in place to prevent sending readers to slightly less secure versions of the websites. But then if the reader is really that worried about security, they'll likely not mind copying, pasting, and replacing the 'S'. Or, more likely like me, they'll have a browser extension that always uses the secure website when available regardless of whether the link contains the 'S' or not.

Duly noted, Baron smiley - ok

I'll return to my former practice of posting links twice and removing the 's' from one of them smiley - geek

I'm not sure I understand the security issue.

For convenience, having a clickable link on my PS so I can go quickly to a link makes sense to me.

I don't believe you need to post the link twice. The one with the excised 'S' works fine regardless of skin choice.

paulh, the 'S' in "https" leads browsers to the "secure" version of the website meaning that it's been encrypted. This is mostly important when entering personal information like usernames, banking information, login credentials, etc. But as I mentioned earlier most browsers, like chrome, firefox, whatever microsoft browser folks use to download its replacement, most of those browsers default to the encrypted version of the page and those that are concerned typically enable a browser extension that does that automatically.

But also, most of the links folks post here are just informational pages. I can't think of any reason someone would post a link to a login page for some website. Maybe, someone posts a link to a vendor website to show a particular product. All reputable online venders make sure their pages where you create an account or make a purchase are always encrypted. (That's why you look for that lock in your browser URL line typically.)

I consider this whole thing with the 'S'es as, at most, a minor bug in the pre-pliny skins.
It's definitely much less annoying than that damn cookies manager they added to the pages a while back, that stupid green check shield in the bottom corner. I'm so glad it's no longer popping up EVERY DAMN TIME I log in or open any new pages on h2g2. That made the website extremely irritating.

I can't get rid of the shield, but mostly it just hides a few letters when it's down low enough.

The shield itself has never obscured my view like it has for so many others, but there for so long it was creating page covering pop-ups demanding you either accept the sites new cookie policies or set them individually. That's an acceptable annoyance, ONCE! But it was literally opening every time I opened a new page!

So if I just excise the 'S' everybody is happy?

I only visit h2g2 on my computer and never notice the little green shield in the lower left corner.

It's getting warmer smiley - erm

For the first time since the official measurements began in 1874 my country experienced no days - as in not one! - without centigrades above zero in 2020.
A normal summer and a very mild winter gave Denmark the second highest average temperature since measurements began in 1874.
The average temperature landed at 9.8 centigrades. This has only been surpassed in 2014, when the average temperature was 10.0 degrees.
2020 had zero "ice days". These are days when the temperature does not creep above freezing (0 centigrades).
This is the first time this has happened in the 146 years that the weather in Denmark has been systematically monitored.
At the same time, there were a record few frost days, which is a day where the temperature at some point falls below 0 centigrades. Denmark only experienced 30 frost days in 2020. And even on these days the temps later rose above zero, see above.

I've never seen his show before. Thanks for the link.

I've just looked him up in that website that starts with "W" and was surprised to see hat he was a regular on the short-lived "Dana Carvey Show" (which I watched). I just didn't remember seeing him there.

I *never* wanted Trump to have any power whatsoever. The mob that he incited did a lot of damage --broken windows, forced doors. If anybody else did that kind of stuff, they would be charged and possibly spend time in jail. I'd like to see that happen to these people, but I wonder if it will?

Several dozen have been arrested or turned themselves in already, including some of the most infamous like the one in Pelosi's office, the one that stole her lectern, and Insane Viking QAnon guy.

The FBI is asking for the public to identify them from images and call in with tips.

Many summers ago it dawned on me that there is not just one political spectrum. You know, the one that goes from left to right (or vice versa, it obviously depends on one's point of view), but also one that goes from the most hopeless, blue-eyed naivete to the most raving persecution complex.
I am unfortunately becoming more and more convinced of the correctness of my observation smiley - erm
