You've raised a good question about Adele

Hi, Pierce.

In another thread, you wondered why no CDs by Adele were in my collection. Price was the main factor. There were several times when I went to the store to buy CDs, and Adele's "21" was by far the most expensive. I always ended up buying the least expensive and postponing purchase of Adele's cd. Finally, the other day I counted up how big my collection was, and realized that it was at the exact size that I wanted -- 175 CDs -- and that there no really embarassing omissions. So, I closed the collection, but with the option of opening an overflow collection that was heavy with 21st-century artists and retrospective holdings of people that I really loved.

I believe that Adele will fit very well into a 21st century collection. Her debut album was released in 2008, much too late for the 12/31/2000 end-of-century deadline. Other popular 21-st century artists are Miley Cyrus [debut album in 2006] and Justin Bieber [YouTube in 2008, debut album in 2009]

You're probably wondering why I allowed Lady Gaga [debut album in 2008] and Taylor Swift [debut album in 2006] into my 20th century collection. Well, I was hasty. Two anomalies in a collection of 175 isn't that nad, though. Plus, everywhere I look these days I see Lady gaga and Taylor Swift. They both have *huge* visibility. It seems as if they've been around forever, even though they haven't.

People seem to gain power and visibility very quickly nowadays. Justin Bieber was an unknown when he posted his recordings on YouTube in 2008. A record producer heard them signed him to a recording contract, and had him out on the road doing live concerts in no time. Now he's the third most powerful person on the planet, according to some. Not even president Obama is that powerful. Why? Because Justin uses Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter like a pro.

Like Taylor Swift, Justin has made a big splash on the big screen. I accidentally wandered into a documentary about him last year. Taylor has been in several movies. Miley Cyrus starred in her own TV show in 2006. It didn't hurt that her father was Billy Ray Cyrus. Taylor and Justin didn't have famous parents, so their rise has been all the more remarkable.
