Crop circles - Is the truth out there?

This summer, we (my wife and I) went to spend a few days looking at the crop circles in the area around Avebury. There were certainly enough to see - all in all it was an unforgettable experience. The obvious question, however, is who makes these things? Without going into too much detail, there seem to me to be 3 possibilities:-
1. Practical jokers, using a combination of planks and chains to sweep and flatten the crops.
2. Some paranormal human activity. (The idea I have in mind is of a group of hippies drawing up a suitable glyph, then all concentrating on it until the corresponding image appears in a nearby field.)
3. Some non-human intelligence, attempting to communicate with us.

It's interesting that the locals, without exception, are convinced that (1) is the answer. Several claim to know the individuals concerned, but say they 'can't say any more'.

I just don't know. My own personnal feelings are, however, that the increasing complexity, as well as some of the imagery used, points to the glyphs being the product of a human rather than a non-human intelligence. Whatever, I would urge all who get the chance to go and see for themselves next summer. If the circles are man-made, you'll have the chance to see some of the most remarkable works of art ever created. And if they're not man-made, then Avebury could just be the most important place in the World.

Fasnacht

We are coming up to an important part of the year for many people in Central Europe - Fasnacht / Carnival. The custom of a big knees-up before the start of Lent has more or less died out in Britain (apart from the relic of Shrove Tuesday) but several parts of Switzerland and Southern Germany have huge street parties which last for a week up to the last Tuesday before Lent - the one in Lucerne is very influenced by the rather more famous goings-on in Rio, although the climate is obviously very different.
It's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
Unfortunately, I'm not sufficiently steeped in Fasnacht lore to be able to write a reasonable Guide entry, but I think one should be compiled.
Interestingly, one of the most popular presenters on Swiss TV is called Monika Fasnacht. Opinion is divided about her - some people think she's incredibly dull and bland, but others consider her to be the ultimate in feminine attraction.

Americans abroad

Am I the only one to notice that Americans very rarely seem to feel comfortable outside teh USA? They're always complaining that the Coca Cola doesn't taste 'right', or that they can't find Jay Leno on the TV, or something.
Here in Switzerland, US-expats never seem to last for long before returning home, whereas people from almost every other nation settle down fine.
