Hi there. Nice to speak to someone who lives in Vancouver. I first visited your city to visit my brother in 1991 and a gain 4 years later. I haven't been back since but still feel that it's somewhere I would like to live. My brother has moved from Kitsilano to Gibsons to White Rock. I Have seen Kits and Gibsons but have not yet discovered the pleasures of White Rock. Maybe soon.

Vancouver has changed considerably since 1994 - about a 30% population increase due to a large influx of Asian immigration - mostly Indian, Chinese, Korean and Filipino. The City of Vancouver's population is about 700,000 -- the metro area is about 2.3 million.
Be prepared to spend a lot of money on rent or real estate if you choose to relocate here. Unlike the USA, the real estate market still favours the sellers, though the price of housing has dipped slightly from a year ago -- not nearly as expensive as London but certainly one of the most expensive markets in North America. White Rock is fairly expensive, though it boats a nice area with a good swimming beach. There are good deals in the outer suburbs, though. Good three-bedroom houses of approx. 2,500 sq. ft. for less than $500,000 (250,000 quid).

I just thought you might like to know that with the current global financial crisis and market instability, the Greater Vancouver housing situation is now decidely a " buyer's market. " Most homes have experienced a loss of 20% in value over the last 6 months. Some of the higher-end homes have seen a drop in value closer to 25%. Quite a few homeowners are looking to find smaller, less-expensive homes in order to consolidate their debts and reduce/eliminate mortgages. Some prospective buyers are "landing" decent homes by making ridiculously low offers, since sales are slow and many of the sellers are desperate. Mortgage rates here (as elsewhere) are also dropping.

Thanks for that RC. Good to know. We are now actually considering relocating to Vancouver and might well come over for a visit for a couple of weeks in 2009.
