I see nobody took upon themselves the task to bid you Welcome. Therefor now *I* will do so.

Welcome to H2G2, the earth edition of the one and only Guide. You may be a smartass as much as you want here, without anybody getting cross with you, as long as you don't spit on people smiley - smiley

I hope you'll have a hell of a good time here, and if you need assistance and the "don't panic!" button doesn't provide the answer, just ask around. most of us are quite helpful and mostly harmless smiley - smiley

Enjoy your visits to the guide, Joker, see you around!

It isn't all that hard (depending on which thing "this thing" is smiley - smiley).
If you want to use pictures in the forums, forget it: nobody can do it!. Links are possible in forums, but not the usual tags, just type the address you want the link to connect to, and it'll automatically convert into a link.

On "Guide Entries" such as your introductio page, things are a bit different. If you're editing your page in "Plain Text" mode, it's like a forum: no pictures, and only plain addresses which automatically convert to links. If you want to include pictures and true links, you'll have to set the page-editor to GuideML or HTML first, and click the "Change" button. In both modes the standard HTML-tags for links and pictures are valid, but in GuideML also some specialized new tags are available which make it even more fun and easy. If you want to know more about GuideML, visit Bruce's GuideML Clinic at http://www.h2g2.com/A187229smiley - smiley

I hope this helps.
Good Luck.

Just wanted to add my welcome (Welcome!) and mention that even once you have the HTML ability to put pictures on your "home page", you still need somewhere online to store them... All user pics are external links, that's to say that you need to have some webspace other than on the guide to put them on...

There's a lot of it about, and much of it is free - try out http://www.geocities.com (now owned by Yahoo!) if all else fails - they need Ads on the page if you store your site there, but not if you just use it to store pictures smiley - bigeyes

I heard mention, however, that you can't use their space for storage of stuff that's only referenced from other locations, or am I mistaken now? The Don't Panic page can clear that up I believe.

Skeleton, I have a site on Geocities, but also have subdirectories for Guide stuff etc. - as long as you have at least one "legitimate" page there, they can't prove the rest isn't "work in progress"... smiley - bigeyes

You can always check out http://www.thefreesite.com - they have links to lots of free webspace, applets, icons & graphics etc...

Hi Peet,

Then I must have been mistaken about Geocities in this respect. My apologies.
I'll save that link for when people ask me about free space. I have space of my own smiley - smiley

Thanks for the update. As an ACE I'll be able to help people with it smiley - smiley
