I have just finished editing your excellent Brisbane entry and wondered if you would like to re-check it before I pass it back to the Editors. smiley - smiley

Sadly I had to remove a couple of references as you are only supposed to link to edited entries in Guide Entries... so the 'Australian and NZ Club' and the 'Australia - A Cultural Perspective' had to go. smiley - sadface

Apart from that, and a few very minor s/p's, it is pretty much as you submitted it. smiley - ok

Let me know if you are happy and I'll send it back asap. smiley - cheers

Thanks!! smiley - smiley

The reference to Australia - a cultural perspective is still in the article (link from the word Queensland in the first line). Incidentally, it's also been recommended, and is undergoing editing as:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/A721243

So if we can keep it, that would be great!

I'd like to correct something - can you please change the word "poisonous" to "venomous" in the "wildlife" section.

After reading a recent newspaper article, I thought of adding the following footnote under "Wildlife" after the words "venomous snakes"...something like -

Australia is home to some of the most dangerous land-snakes in the world (although see this dissenting opinion: Australia's venomous snakes: The modern myth</LINK&gtsmiley - winkeye, and the most venomous of these are found around Brisbane - and even in the city-centre. A woman was bitten by what was believed to be a Brown snake in the newly-opened Roma St park (she survived). So it's a good idea not to put your hands or feet where you can't see them (further footnote? - hence the advice in the entry on Australia(link) about not putting your hands down holes) - and see also footnote 1.

That might take a bit of editing, or leave it out entirely - up to you, I don't mind either way.

Thanks again.

If you do make it to Brisbane, I'd be pleased to buy you a beer.

Hi,
The entry has popped up at the bottom of my home page "pending".

Looks like the editor has removed the first footnote "not getting the front end confused with the back end etc" and consequently the reference to footnote 1 in the last footnote makes absolutely no sense...? Is this the final version?

smiley - cheers

Hmmmm... must have happened inhouse because I changed nothing after your final nod of approval! smiley - erm

I'll drop them a line and point out the folly of their ways. smiley - smiley

Hi, I don't know if this a bit presumptuous, but I think if the footnote is going to be brought into the main text, it would read a bit better if it went as follows:

--------
Australia is home to some of the most dangerous land-snakes in the world (although see this dissenting opinion: Australia's venomous snakes: The modern myth), and the most venomous of these are found around Brisbane - and even in the city-centre. A woman was bitten by what was believed to be a brown snake in the newly-opened Roma Street Park (she survived). So it's a good idea not to put your hands or feet where you can't see them - hence the advice in the entry on Australia about not putting your hands down holes.

Brisbane is also the home of numerous varieties of venomous spiders, particularly the Redback spider, a relative of the North American Black Widow. The Redback is a small black web-residing spider with a red hourglass symbol on its back, reminiscent of a black leather jacket and gang patch. The Redback spreads on the wind, riding the currents and invading houses like hordes of wanton bikies intent on destruction.
-----------
What do you think?
