Full disclosure: I, too, have been Zorro. I was forced to it in the 1950s by Mrs Hoggett. She was five. She had a striped shirt. She insisted on cosplaying Sergeant Garcia. Mrs Hoggett was a born character actress. She stuck me with all the heroes. I wasn't happy because heroes usually got boring lines and besides, I hated Westerns.
My mom wouldn't let us have those swords, though. We had to use the cardboard coathanger liners provided by the dry cleaners. They broke a lot, causing production difficulties.
Anyway, here's a Zorro story for you.

Excellent - Zorro and Batman were two of my favourite Saturday morning TV shows that I would watch with my dad, so I appreciate learning more about the masked Californian
"mellow luscious cheese"
"Historically speaking, Zorro is a moveable feast." -
"Zorro does it with style - Yeah!
The only bit I wasn't clear about is "Even modern fans know this: they've seen Bruce Wayne's parents gunned down right after viewing the 1920 Mark of Zorro with their son." - I see the Mark of Zorro was mentioned in a Batman comic in 1986 or so - was it in one of the Batman films as well?

Yes, it was in one of the films. I'm not sure which one, since I don't watch 'Batman' films. Maybe BB knows.

I don't recall it being mentioned in the Batman films per se - there's a random film they saw in 'Batman' (1989) and an opera in 'Batman Begins' - mind you as Batman is owned by Warner Bros and the Zoro films were made by 20th Century Fox, Republic (now owned by Paramount) and Columbia/TriStar/Sony, you wouldn't expect them to advertise another company's film.
That said it was definitely Zoro in the television series 'Gotham'.
