This Entry is dedicated to my darling, who shared my interest in these smallest of plants and bought me a book about them smiley - loveblush

It is also dedicated to Dmitri Gheorgheni for giving me the encouragement A87910301 to write about the topic for h2g2 smiley - ok

This is another lovely entry! smiley - smiley

When walking in the countryside, I've often been impressed by carpets of moss in a variety of shades of green.smiley - smiley

So if I want moss in my garden, do I just wait for it to turn up? Do they sell them in garden centres?

One typo smiley - biro In the sentence beginning 'Make sure there is drainage' I think there's an 'in' missing before 'a rock'

I've successfully gotten moss to grow from spore on terracotta earthenware pottery, which is naturally porous.

It helps if the surface is roughened with sandpaper or pumice stone before firing.

Pumice itself also works well.

Chalkstone, like sandstone, pumice and terracotta pottery is another excellent surface for growing moss.

Portable surfaces simplify the problem of keeping the moss free of debris.

If one is going to be growing moss in the garden, the effort can be defeated by deciduous leaf fall.

If one needs to remove fallen leaves from a planting of moss, its best done either by hand or with a blower.

Having gone for a walk round my garden, I can confirm I've got lots of moss! smiley - smiley Mainly in the lawn on the north side, where it's difficult to grow more delicate things.

But my garden is best described as 'mature'.smiley - winkeye

I really love this Entry! I saw quite a few pictures of Japanese moss gardens lately. When I tried to find pictures of the ones you mentioned google corrected 'Tokofuji' to 'Tokifuji', I'm not sure if that's the one you mean.

Thanks Tav!

Thanks for pointing out the name - I had a bit of difficulty with it when I was writing the Entry, that the geometric moss garden http://i.pinimg.com/736x/96/6b/6a/966b6a0e795bd8324e46c52a6ddc724b.jpg was linked with three different spellings online... I've updated it, but will check my moss book again later smiley - ok

Yes, I’m proud of my little moss garden (which I shall send a photo of for this) so I think more people should cultivate them smiley - ok
