Updated from A299162 - Birmingham, Alabama, USA by msmonsy

I'm writing this update at the request of the Guide Editors, who wanted something more to link to next Martin Luther King Day - and a pronunciation guide to Birminghams.

Full disclosure:
The original Entry is 294 words long.
This one is 1629.

I kept the original text, but altered dates, numbers, and facts as sources warranted. The expanded text is the result of my own researches and a primary source - Dr King himself.

I will admit to geography-based prejudice. I am from Tennessee. During the Great Depression, my father told me, they had no money to maintain jails, and fell back on the time-honoured custom of exile as a form of punishment.

As a result, criminals were sentenced to 'two years in Georgia or Alabama'.

Nicely done indeed - the original text fits in well alongside important extra detail, so this will be an asset to the Guide.

In one of the conversations under the original Entry they said the statue of Vulcan had been removed. Of course that was in 2002, have you checked to see if it is still there? I did not see it mentioned in the link to Red Mountain.

In all fairness, the furthest I have ventured in Alabama is the city of Dothan.

Dothan is in the south east corner of the state, I was going from the Florida pan-handle to Charleston, SC. The Interstate would have been faster, but I love driving down country roads. I was no where near Birmingham. Do you know which mountain range it is in? It seems a little too far south and west for the Appalachians.

The history of the statue is interesting, it might be worth a link, if it stays up. I also did a brief search http://connecticuthistory.org/charles-goodyear-and-the-vulcanization-of-rubber/ It has nothing to do with Alabama, but I found it interesting all the same.

Thank you for your time and effort checkingsmiley - biggrin

smiley - laugh No problem. Actually, Red Mountain is part of the tail end of the Appalachians. I think it's an extension into Alabama of the Cumberland Plateau, which is the Middle Tennessee high country. smiley - smiley

I'll go back and revisit that statue when I get a moment.

Just doing a thorough readthrough of this, as the update won't be sent to a Sub-editor, but it looks to be nearly ready smiley - ok

"In this region, Cotton was king" - should that be "cotton"?

"The modern city was founded in 1871 at the intersection of two newly constructed railroads and named hopefully for another industrial centre: Birmingham in England."
Does "named hopefully for" mean it was named after Birmingham in the hope that it too would become a large industrial centre?

" four girls, aged eleven to fourteen, who were attending Sunday School. Twenty-two other churchgoers were injured. "
For House Style, this should be " four girls, aged 11 to 14, who were attending Sunday School. 22 other churchgoers were injured. "

"He served for twenty years." - "He served for 20 years."

Change numbers and cotton as suggested. smiley - smiley

I meant 'named hopefully' in the actual meaning of the word 'hopeful'. I'd like it to stay that way, but if you change it, please change it to 'named for another industrial centre, Birmingham in England, in the hope that the name would prove a positive omen.'

Anything else you needed?
