Entry: Nora Waln: A Tourist in Nazi Germany, and What She Found There - A87939959
Author: Dmitri Gheorgheni - Not Banned in China - U1590784

I first read this book about half a century ago. I remembered it the other day while thinking about D-Day. I looked it up, re-read it, and realised how many of the places the author talked about were very familiar - in the meantime, I'd lived there. smiley - laugh

Anyway, I thought this entry might be a decent digest of the story. It's longish, but that's because of the quotes.

You can call me TC

I don't think it's too long. Thank you for posting this.

Apparently (according to Amazon) the book is at present unavailable, although other books by Nora Waln are available in paperback. On the Gutenberg project, the same books are also available to download (Street of Precious Pearls and Ravished Armenia). Which is a pity, now you have whetted our appetite for this book.

Instalments is spelt with one "L" in British English.

Thanks for reading! smiley - smiley And thanks for reading so closely! I'll got chase down that errant 'l'.

smiley - yikes I didn't realise the book wasn't available on Amazon. They always list books with a bot, and you have to click to find out they don't have it. I think that's a cheap trick. smiley - rolleyes

You can read it here anytime:

A chilling and gripping digest of the story - not too long indeed as it reads very well.

I just made a minor correction inspired by Sasha and Gnomon's discussion of names. Nora Waln's husband was named George Edward Osland-Hill. Their daughter was from a previous marriage of Osland-Hill's, so I snuck in the info that Marie was her stepdaughter. She never mentioned this in the book, as I'm sure she thought of Marie as her daughter. smiley - laugh It pays to double-check.

This is interesting but not surprising.smiley - smiley

Don't most people try to get on with normal life as long as they can? By the time that's impossible, it's too late to do anything about it.smiley - sadface
It's also easy to be biassed in favour of your own people - friends and countrymen.

I remember reading 'Night Falls on the City' by Sarah Gainham, set in war-time Vienna. In this, the heroine, a famous actress struggles to survive and hide her Jewish husband. The final disaster comes when the Russians arrive.
