This is amazingly good. smiley - biggrin It also proves that somewhere, sometime, there's a 'right reader' for every author. Even Charlotte Yonge, the woman I love to hate. smiley - rofl

You've done a lovely job here of appreciation + deconstruction. smiley - applause

I have one request:

>>We meet Honora at the start of the novel when she is a young woman with auburn hair.<<

This is a beautiful sentence, and it made my day. But just in case nobody gets it, could you add another sentence? Is the auburn hair particularly stressed by the authoress? Does it play a role in Honora's fortunes? Does it change colour over time, due to the incredible stress of the fast-paced action of a Charlotte Yonge novel?

Or is it merely important, because appearances are so important to this fictional world?

How different her life would have been had Honora's hair been merely 'red'...As Mark Twain so astutely remarked, '“When red-headed people are above a certain social grade their hair is auburn.' smiley - winkeyeThis is amazingly good. smiley - biggrin It also proves that somewhere, sometime, there's a 'right reader' for every author. smiley - facepalm Please forgive the verboseness. That's due to my struggle with the parser, which was being recalcitrant today. First it erased my post, then reproduced it. Quelle horreur.

Charlotte would not have been pleased.

Thanks Dmitri smiley - biggrin

Yes, at 570 pages or thereabouts, the novel was a bit long, to say the least, but there were some superb chapters about love and loss that really resonated with me so it was a pleasure to read.

I've added a bit more about Honora's hair - it does indeed change colour over time because of the incredible stress of the fast pace of the Charlotte Yonge novel smiley - laugh

Verboseness forgiven - it has been playing up today... Yes indeed Charlotte would not be pleased to have no opportunity to edit that! smiley - laugh
