It could be £4? Scotland, England and Wales .
Or if you are Pedantic £1 for England only.

Wrong on both guesses.
Hint: think more mathematical rather than geographical. The same logic could also give you the price of a map of France (or Morocco), for instance.

Another clue:
Assign mathematical values to the letters.

Another BIG CLUE:
Assign values to vowels and consonants.

It's £5.
You add £3 for every vowel, and remove £1 for every consonant.

A Man in Uniform
A man in uniform stands on the beach of a tropical island. He takes out a cigarette, lights it, and begins smoking. He then opens a letter and begins reading it. The cigarette burns down between his fingers, but he doesn't throw it away. He then cries. Why?

This sounds like a Japanese soldier is still fighting the second world war, unaware that it finished in 1945. But I don't understand why he didn't read the letter before, expalining that Japan had surrendered and the war was over.
Am I close?

A clue would help. I keep thinking the uniform means a soldier.

PedanticBarSteward Posted Oct 5, 2005
He is not a soldier
Clue: He doesnÕt cry because of the letter's contents.

Is it anything to do with an official at a wedding ceromony on a tropical island (though I'm not sure 'uniform' is applicable, nor why he is smoking)?

Miles off - I'm afraid.

Is he a firefighter, convalescing after losing his arm and having it re-attached. The letter tells him that he should having some feelings returning to his arm, but having burned himself without feeling anything, he knows the operation was unsuccessful.

No - another reason for not feeling the burning cigarette?

He's wearing gloves? Though, if so, it doesn't help me with the rest.
