She only got it that fast because I did half the work for her.

Not true! (He's my brother, by the way). He just made the table- I did all the real work. If he hadn't done it I would have, and it wouldn't have taken too long. He's just sore because I was faster than him.

We actually don't know that because I forgot to time myself.

You started at 1:52 (I think) and it was at least half an hour before you told me you got it (I think). I don't know if you were working all that time but that's when I was told you were done.

Ooh, I remember this from a "Top of the Form" quiz book from 30 years ago.

"Though not its proper function"
Said the owner, Henry Tupp
"It might go up a chimney down
but never down one up"

Sheep in wolfs clothing

You are a contestant in a gameshow and have reached the final. The host offers you three envelopes, of which you must pick one. In one envelope is the star prize, a car. In one is the second prize, a holiday. In the last one is nothing.
You take your pick. The host then opens one of the remaining two to show it is the envelope with nothing. He then asks you if you want to change your mind and take the last, unopened envelope.
What should you do to maximise your chance of winning the car?
(Note that the host knew what was in each envelope and deliberately opened the one that he did. All the envelopes are identical except for their contents).

Do nothing cos the host must have known you have the car or he wouldn't have offered you the chance to change (?)

Sorry, that's wrong.
Think about the statistics at each stage of the problem.

I've thought about the statistics at each stage.
I've had people try to convince me that I'm wrong in my conclusion.
It's your turn now. Good Luck.
Initially you have a one in three chance of being "right". The removal of one option "improves" this to one in two. The host knows that after your choice he has at least one "wrong" card and possibly two. So it can be perceived that he is increasing the chance of winning. In fact it was always the plan to be an evens chance so you are no better placed after the removal of one wrong card. It would make no difference if the choice were between two cards right from the start.
It's just a gag to increase the suspense.
I should like to have it tested by experiment but as it is theoretically possible to have a tossed coin land heads up "n" times in succession I doubt I should be converted by the result.

Over to you.
