Can you mix the numbers, such as (9*8)-7 or 9*(8-7)

Icy North Posted Apr 25, 2012
They're not the same numbers - they're different numbers formed from the same digits.

I do not think that the numbers read 7 hundred and 77 etc.
I think that they are meant to read 7,7,7,8,8,8,and 9,9,9.
I will wait for confirmation.

Trivial, in fact:
77*8 - 7*88 + 999 = 999
That's why I think they're after something using 777, 888 and 999.

I am looking for an answer using the individual numbers 7, 8 and 9 three times each. I believe there is an answer using 777, 888 and 999 but using computing language.
P.S. unless you mistyped your answer, Icy, it is wrong.

No, it's correct, but I'll add brackets to make it absolutely clear:
(77 x 8) - (7 x 88) + 999 = 999
or: 616 - 616 + 999 = 999

I think that Sheep indicated that you cannot use figures such as "seventy seven" or "eighty eight".
He says:-
I am looking for an answer using the individual numbers 7, 8 and 9 three times each.
But he does contradict this by saying:-
I believe there is an answer using 777, 888 and 999 but using computing language.

Icy, apologies for my earlier comment (I must have mistyped in my calculator). I agree that this answers the questions using the numbers given. There is also an answer using single digits only, if you want to attempt it. Otherwise it's your turn to set another.

7*7*7=343
9*9*8=648
(9-8)+8=8
Add above answers =999
