I just made this, but it's still setting. Once the cherry pie filling is on, I'll take a picture.
It's the 3rd of July and too hot for cooking.

Pretty!
Yes, on warm summer days such as today it is important to have some recipes to hand that don't require use of an oven
I appreciate footnote 1 - an icebox can be a box with ice in, so my first thought was that it was a freezer rather than a fridge
Weirdly, I notice the bullet points are on the picture - not seen that before Not a problem, though - if the picture is changed to EMBED="RIGHT" that should sort things out
Clear instructions - excellent spatula usage

Thanks, Sasha! Good catch - I moved the picture to the right. It's an oddity of h2g2 that the bullet points get snagged by the photos. (Happens in the Post all the time.)
It occurred to me that most people were too young to have heard about 'iceboxes'. In the early 20th century, fridges weren't electric. They had a place at the top to put blocks of ice, which were bought from ice wagons at 5 cents/10 cents a block. The ice was brought in by the 'iceman' (although during the wars, young women took over the job) and put in the icebox.
The ice melted and the water ran down the side of the fridge into a pan underneath. The pan was emptied periodically.
In summer, kids would get ice chips from the iceman as a treat. That's also why everybody owned an icepick, to chip blocks of ice for sucking on, or to use for churning ice cream. I still remember hand-churned ice cream - and dads having a flex contest to show off how long and hard they could turn the crank...
My mom still had an ice pick - she and her mother both used icepicks to poke holes into cans of evaporated milk, which we used in our coffee. The hole allowed for controlled flow. I still do but use the can opener attachment to open them.
Funny how material culture changes - if we do it right, the Guide can be a guide to that, too.
Key: Complain about this post
