I ran across the first illustration on Twitter. It was originally mislabelled and was being used as a weapon in the 5G wars. 'See how dumb you look?' was the cry.

Historians replied, 'Well, er...'

So I did some hunting in newspapers from 1889. You can read the story.

Thank you - this will be an asset to the Edited Guide.

Impressive linkage, too - I hadn't realised Nellie Bly had seen such things as an execution during her visits to jails...

I've always meant to find time to read her book on Mexico, but haven't yet. I think she saw quite a lot.

Yes, I must admit I only briefly looked at 'Six Months in Mexico' as I concentrated on 'Around the World in 72 Days'. Her curiosity about the world was admirable smiley - ok

smiley - ok Thanks, GB!

I added the links and changed 'Nicola' to 'Nikola'. Some older texts spell him 'Nicola', which is where I got confused.

I also fell down a rabbit hole with his pronunciation. Apparently, Elon Musk mispronounces the name as 'Tezla', but knowledgeable sources say that's just because of Musk's South African accent. The name is pronounced 'Tessla', apparently.

I'm glad to know these things, as Tesla is a major character in my upcoming November novel, 'The Electrical Journey of Izzy Himmelfarb'. smiley - laugh
