A timely Entry - I went to a charity shop last week and found a DVD of Roald Dahl short stories with animations inspired by the drawings of Quentin Blake smiley - ok

Good memories, too - Danny, the Champion of the World was the first novel I read, and I read most of it while sitting on my daddy’s knee smiley - biggrin

One thing I don’t recall, though, is what year it was set in - the film changed the setting to the 1950s instead of the 1970s?

smiley - ok

Good point - the novel for Danny was set in the 1970s (specifically 'more than 40 years' after 1933, but the exact year isn't stated) so I've added that now.

Was James and the Giant Peach originally 1970s, too?

I haven’t seen that one, but we did have The BFG on VHS so I’ve seen that a few times, and saw some of the cels in the Cosgrove Hall museum that used to be in Liverpool smiley - biggrin

Roald Dahl didn't mention an exact date but the novel was published in 1961 and mentions limousines, helicopters, four-engined passenger aircraft and 'television companies' (plural) in both the UK and US, so though limousines, helicopters, four-engined aircraft and television all existed by 1939, there wasn't more than one television company in the UK until ITV began in 1955 almost 20 years after the BBC began television broadcasting, so a date of early 1960s is likeliest.

'He has been voted by the public in a television poll as the greatest storyteller of all time...'

Could you please specify:

1. Whose poll? and
3. In what country?

Good point there, though to what extent a country applies to an online poll is debatable. It looks like predominantly UK-based poll, though.
